We have stayed many times at Brekka Lodge and keep returning. We have already booked for August 2019. The accommodation is perfect, so comfortable and clean. I have been fed up with the state of several cottages we have stayed in recently, here, I can walk in and not have to start cleaning or be greeted with horrible cooking utensils. Sheila is always on hand if needed but is respectful of our privacy.
Fladdabister is a lovely location and just a short stroll from the cottage is the pretty pebble beach with walks available along the coast. This July, the area has been very busy with nesting birds such as Turns. Nearby are many of the sites worth visiting such as Sumburgh Lighthouse and St Ninians beach. I will always recommend Brekka Lodge as a lovely and well maintained cottage to stay in.
A spacious, well presented and well-equipped property well located for exploring all of Shetland from Sumburgh Head to Muckle Flugga. A short drive from the town of Lerwick for the ferry or Sumburgh and Tingwall airports. Very peaceful and a lovely beach a few minutes walk where most evenings we saw a seal or three. We also had a snipe on the lawn each evening. The owner was helpful and quick to respond to queries and provided a nice welcome pack of goodies and useful things.
Our first visit to Shetland. Brekka Lodge is a few miles south of Lerwick. The house is built of wood (as are a lot of houses on Shetland), warm and well-insulated. The owners live next door and are welcoming and friendly. Thanks to clever positioning of the large windows overlooking the coast and fields, there is no feeling of being overlooked or having one's privacy impinged upon. The bedrooms are large and the house is decorated in cool, fresh colours. Sheila mentioned that they have been letting Brekka Lodge for 9 years, but everything was so clean, neat and new-looking that we could easily have thought it newly built!
As principal cook in the family, I greatly appreciated the best-equipped kitchen I have ever come across in a holiday cottage.
The cottage is within an easy walk of the beach - yes, we saw a couple of seals. Or they saw us: they popped their heads above the waves and stared at us for several minutes. And visiting in April, the fields next door were filling rapidly with newborn lambs.
This was our second visit to Shetland in 9 months so much has the place got under our skin. Brekka Lodge only made us love it the more. Really well-appointed, sparkling and roomy accommodation in the most stunning location with views over to Bressay and Noss and, what we thought of as our own private beach, no more than 5 mins walk away. Fladdabister is an excellent base to explore the whole island and really well-placed for Lerwick and Scalloway. There is excellent walking straight out of the lodge along the coast and, as we found, the natives are exceedingly friendly. Our host, Sheila, was no exception to this and made us most welcome with nothing appearing too much trouble. Overall, the perfect package in the stunning other world that is Shetland. Our only worry is that the justified popularity of this property, means that we will have to decide soon which weeks to return next year before they get booked up.
Stayed for 5 days in March at Brekka and really enjoyed it. Property is very well equipped, warm, very clean and easy to find. Lovely cove a few minutes’ walk away where we saw seals. Short drive north to Lerwick and only 25 mins from the airport. Small shop and cafe (MacKenzies) which can be walked to if needed. Shetland is stunning.
