We stayed here for two nights as part of a tour group. The location in Kirkwall was a good travelling base and location of the hotel on the harbour front excellent.
Our room, although small was very comfortable - the evening were spent dining or in the bar so I did not spend long periods of waking time there. Some of the older single ladies in our group did comment on the need for a residents' lounge to spend time after dinner. There are some seats on a corridor lead in to the dining room and I appreciate constraints of space.
Breakfast was an excellent hot and cold buffet with the makings of a full Scottish breakfast readily available. Dinner in the restaurant was very good generally.
The bar is open to the public and I did get one or two conversations with locals here.
All the hotel staff were welcoming and friendly.
My overall experience was most enjoyable.

Lovely hotel in a very central location. Friendly welcome and helpful staff. Room was spotless and the bed very comfortable. Good selection of meals available in the restaurant. The panna cotta with orkney fudge ice cream was to die for. Would definitely recommend this place.

The hotel is well-placed for walking into Kirkwall to see the sights. Our room was comfortable and had a nice view of the harbour. The food was good and the staff were helpful and friendly. A very clean, pleasant hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the harbour.

A group of five of us stayed at the Ayre Hotel in Kirkwall for the first night of our Scotland trip. It was a bit pot luck using Trip Advisor reviews to make a choice on an island and in a town I had no prior knowledge. The Ayre Hotel was fine, let's say in order of expectation. A few large bus tour groups and a modest breakfast and dinner, but a hospitable welcome, clean rooms, decent nights sleep and good location add up to a favourable review for the Ayre Hotel

Very helpful staff. Solid breakfast to start your day. Bar was a little shabby and lacking in atmosphere. Didn’t eat in the restaurant but it seemed popular. Rooms were large, modern and clean. Noisy plumbing and hot water was slow to come (and patchy). But these are minor complaints that wouldn’t stop us staying again.
