“Towering structure”

Millers Dale Viaduct
Reviewed 12 October 2017

With a little imagination you can still picture steam locomotives hauling their trains over this towering structure and into the station just beyond. To walk over it today one gets to appreciate the engineering that went into building this wonderful bridge.

Plenty of car parking with toilets - one has to pay but it is worth it for the upkeep of the place.
The Manifold Valley Trail for walkers and cyclists which will take you to near Bakewell is adjoining but it can be busy during school holidays in nice weather.

Cyclists and those interested in old railway routes would love the old station and information boards as well as the fabulous remains of the 4 lnes and platforms that once ran across the viaduct and now make for an excellent cycle route to beyond Bakewell

Milers Dale viaduct is part of the Monsal Trail, and as such it is surrounded by lovely countryside and wonderful views. Especially nice on a sunny day.

We picked Millers Dale Station to start a there and back walk along the Monsal Trail. We walked the trail as far as the Bakewell end of the Cresswell Tunnel. Along the way we enjoyed passing through the well lit tunnels and the views of the mills and dales alongside the line.
There were some excellent information boards along the way and good parking and toilet facilities at Millers Dale Station.
There were quite a few other walkers and cycle parties around but we still enjoyed plenty of quiet and solitude along the way.
We had the rare treat of seeing a mole as it briefly emerged from its earthpile in pursuit of a worm and got some good photos of a Goldcrest. The trail gives access to some wildlife sites but we did not have time to wander.
