I have done hundreds of camping trips all over the place and have never found the need to write a poor review as lets face it camping in the woods \ fields is basic stuff, not a lot to go wrong, or so i thought, until visiting the hollybush inn, they let the camping world down!
We arrived and were told nothing, by the "office" (grumpy lady manning the over priced store) just left to our own divices. We were in a motor home, our friends were booked for the tipi. When i looked inside, as we were first to arrive, i was horrified.
We've stayed in tipi's before in fact the weekend before further down the Wye, when we got to those, they had futon beds, clean rush matting, sheep skin rugs, a kettle and tea and coffee, some firewood and matchs, a reel cosy place to stay that you could'nt wait to get into. But these at Hollybush inn were bare, had damp floors and a damp smell, were as about as uninviting as you can imagine!
We were later told off for using some of the fallon twigs for kindling for our fire, by a very rude woman, who talked to us like kids, and told us we should have bought there over priced wood!
We hired canoes from them and the same rude woman, delt with that. Again i've hired many canoes for day trips and you always get a dry bag or tub to put your camera \ phone etc etc in as you never know if you are going to end up in the river. But with these people when i asked, i was told in a patronizing voice if you want that, they are another £2 to hire from the shop and that was on top of way over the odds for the canoe hire in the first place. She expected us to load our canoes onto her trailer, with no thanks but lots of remarks like "does'nt your common sence tell its not tied like that"!
The campsite looked like a dump, bits of rubbish every where and old half built toilet blocks, no hot water, dirty, overpriced supplies and food, everything looked half built and very tierd.
In summery, we had a good time despite "that women" and her camp site, as we enjoyed sitting around the camp fire and the canoe trip but i will never go there again and feel very sorry for any first time campers \ canoers who after camping there think this is what campings like, its not.
For great tipi hire and canoeing try Tipi Adventures from further down the wye near Hereford.
