“Dont let this be your first camping experience, it will put you off for life!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 September 2011

I have done hundreds of camping trips all over the place and have never found the need to write a poor review as lets face it camping in the woods \ fields is basic stuff, not a lot to go wrong, or so i thought, until visiting the hollybush inn, they let the camping world down!

We arrived and were told nothing, by the "office" (grumpy lady manning the over priced store) just left to our own divices. We were in a motor home, our friends were booked for the tipi. When i looked inside, as we were first to arrive, i was horrified.

We've stayed in tipi's before in fact the weekend before further down the Wye, when we got to those, they had futon beds, clean rush matting, sheep skin rugs, a kettle and tea and coffee, some firewood and matchs, a reel cosy place to stay that you could'nt wait to get into. But these at Hollybush inn were bare, had damp floors and a damp smell, were as about as uninviting as you can imagine!

We were later told off for using some of the fallon twigs for kindling for our fire, by a very rude woman, who talked to us like kids, and told us we should have bought there over priced wood!

We hired canoes from them and the same rude woman, delt with that. Again i've hired many canoes for day trips and you always get a dry bag or tub to put your camera \ phone etc etc in as you never know if you are going to end up in the river. But with these people when i asked, i was told in a patronizing voice if you want that, they are another £2 to hire from the shop and that was on top of way over the odds for the canoe hire in the first place. She expected us to load our canoes onto her trailer, with no thanks but lots of remarks like "does'nt your common sence tell its not tied like that"!

The campsite looked like a dump, bits of rubbish every where and old half built toilet blocks, no hot water, dirty, overpriced supplies and food, everything looked half built and very tierd.

In summery, we had a good time despite "that women" and her camp site, as we enjoyed sitting around the camp fire and the canoe trip but i will never go there again and feel very sorry for any first time campers \ canoers who after camping there think this is what campings like, its not.

For great tipi hire and canoeing try Tipi Adventures from further down the wye near Hereford.

site is terrible, would not use loo or showeres no matter how desperate, better to dip in river and pee in bushes. Turned up in campervan with our own loo etc.were going to buy meals and drinks from pub but wanted £7 each a night to stay. £14 to stay one night putting money behind the bar and not using their so called facillities! Having stayed there 3 yrs ago and since watching tv show still a mess . £14 is top price to pay at any campsite with good facilities. Gypsy camps look cleaner and better organised

This place is a tip. The bottles thrown over the wall as you enter the carpark are a warning of what standards to expect. The main block showers were non functional and the temporary ones we were directed to were filthy. The toilets were blocked and overflowing, excrement and toilet paper all over the floor. My wife informed me the ladies were marginally better. A friend stayed in a teepee which was filthy. He was visited by nocturnal creatures (rats?) the first night and didn't sleep in it after that. For £14.00 for two people it was a rip off. Would we return? Never.

I had the misfortune of going to stay at the Hollybush this weekend and it was the worst place i have ever stayed.

Toilets: blocked, dirty and no lighting at all
Showers: not working, just temporary ones in a portacabin which are just a bare plywood
Pub: Saving grace, nice pleasant people
Appearance: building site
Accomodation: Tired, uncared for, dirty and musty. The teepee's were in a state of disrepair too.

Its just a generally run down place with no sign of that a maintenance man / gardener / cleaner had been employed in years.

The owners and staff were great though, very friendly its a real shame as the location is ideal.

Have a look at the photos, we booked three rooms all of similar quality, there was no sound proofing from the bar to the accomodation, it was like trying to sleep in a bar!
