Owner description: Hestercombe is a unique combination of three centuries of garden design: Coplestone Warre Bampfylde's Georgian landscape garden, the Victorian terrace and shrubbery and the stunning Edwardian garden design by Sir Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll. All have undergone acclaimed restoration work and today provide important examples of gardens in contrasting styles that continue to grow and develop. The award-winning visitor facilities include the warm and welcoming Stables Restaurant & Coffee Shop with a bright, airy, stylish Courtyard.Copyright © Hestercombe Gardens

A gem in the countryside. Beautiful grounds to walk around. Even the kids enjoyed it -grudgingly.

We went to a family fun day and it was great! The gardens are beautiful and there are points of interest for engineering types too!

“The slogan says: 'Paradise restored'. I beg to differ.”
Reviewed 20 September 2011

We were on holiday in Devon and had visited a number of NT properties and a few gardens and attractions. We travelled over 60 miles to see Hestercombe as it had been advertised extensively. What a complete con. A £9.50 entrance fee and the gardens were a huge disappointment. The water in every part of the site needed prompt attention as it was practically stagnant and thick with weed and algae, the formal gardens had quite clearly been planted at the beginning of the season, and left to it, as most of the plants were well past their best, and no thought had been given to all year round interest. There was very little in the way of interesting features throughout the site; we kept referring to the map thinking that we had missed something. We left after an hour, absolutely furious at having wasted £9.50 each. I would suggest Marwood Hill or Rosemoor Gardens as a much better bet, if you're in the area and want to see something special that's actually value for money.

“A lovely estate but rather expensive.”
Reviewed 28 May 2011

A beautiful visit but personally it's not especially worth the admission fee. There are so many delights I can see for free with my national trust card.
