Owner description: The Hepworth Wakefield is Yorkshire's award-winning gallery designed by David Chipperfield Architects which opened to the public in May 2011. The UK's largest purpose-built gallery in over 50 years, we celebrate the achievements of one of Britain's most significant sculptors, Barbara Hepworth, in the city in which she was born and raised. As well as the Hepworth Family Gift, a unique collection of Hepworth's working models gifted to Wakefield through the Art Fund, the gallery also holds the collection of the former Wakefield Art Gallery. Alongside collection displays, we also present a regularly changing programme of contemporary exhibitions by world-renowned artists as well as offering award-winning family and learning activities for all ages, a cafe bar and shop - a perfect day out for all the family. Free admission all year round.

“inspiring modern art museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 February 2012

Free Barbara Hepworth and colleagues exhibits. Convenient car park, 15 mins stroll into town to see the cathedral. The cafe is (as usually in museums) a bit pricey, but good quality snacks.

“Splendid gallery, informative as well as a treat for art lovers”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2012

We visited as a couple during February half term and there were lots of children but they were well catered for and not a distraction. Finding it was easy because of lots of brown tourist signs. Car parking close by. Very helpful, pleasant staff. Our visit lasted three hours. The sculptures were wonderful, as was the section which showed/described the background to the monumental commissions Barbara Hepworth has completed. A good variety of artwork and I was very happy to have made the trip. Exhibits outside the building as well and also a very attractive children's play area.

“Forbidding exterior not lifted by the interior”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 February 2012

What a depressing, gloomy exterior and approach to a much acclaimed modern gallery. it doesn't raise your spirits or anticipation of what is within. The galleries are light and airy with some fabulously large windows giving wonderful views of the weir and river.

The curating of the exhibitions is poor: not enough information or inspiration, lack of connection between exhibits, lack of direction or enthusiasm. Lack lustre and uninspiring.

It is interesting to note that the reviews rave about the cafe, play area for children and drawing activities but hardly comment on the exhibition itself.

“Stunning gallery, stunning setting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 January 2012

The Hepworth is built into the river and certainly catches the eye and the breath. The paintings are great, particularly of the drawings of Moore. The exhibitions of Barbara Hepworth's work were fantastic: evocative, interesting, world class. The shop (very interesting collection of books) is great and the cafe too (very reasonable) and its stocks an excellent locally brewed beer called ... yes, The Hepwoth. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Really enjoyable, recommended.
