Just been on a weekend break to Durham & Whitby with National Holidays staying overnight at the St George Hotel.
The hotel is a 2 storey building in a business park within a couple of hundred yards of Teesside airport. Therein lies it's only fault as once at the hotel you are kind of "captive" to it and it's amenities (especially if you are on a coach tour) - there's absolutely nothing else of interest within easy access. You can access the airport terminal through a gate in the fence surrounding the airport.
As the people on our coach seemed to be the only guests staying at the hotel that evening, I'm guessing by the number of cars that were in the car park that if you are catching a very early flight and stay overnight at the hotel you can get a special deal on parking there while you are away. Probably travellers using the airport are this hotel's main business.
The hotel was probably part of the complex when the airport was an RAF station (maybe the officer's mess?). On it's ground floor is a room dedicated as a museum to the RAF with mainly WW2 memorabilia plus on a grassy plot at the front of the hotel there's a statue of a Canadian officer who lost his life trying to save a fellow officer.
Our room on the second floor was clean and a good size with a good size en-suite bathroom (probably all the rooms are the same). The bath had a shower overhead and the shower had good water pressure and temperature. WiFi is free but you need an access code obtainable from reception.
The hotel was very quiet - we arrived at approx. 5pm Saturday afternoon and the airport appeared "lifeless" - only heard 1 jet taking off on Sunday morning around 6:15am but the noise was far from obtrusive. So we had a decent sleep.
There's a good size lounge with bar and pool table - bar prices are not cheap (£18.50 for a bottle of white wine) and the dining room is a decent size.
An evening meal was provided - 3 courses with choice of 2 starters, 2 mains, 2 desserts - it was good but for me the main course could have been a more generous portion.
Breakfast was buffet style serve yourself with the usual items for an English breakfast. Again the food was good but there was only scrambled eggs - i personally would have preferrred poached/fried eggs.
Overall a good hotel for an overnight stay.

Had to wait to check in as couldn't find any staff around the reception or bar areas, or a bell, or a sign to tell us when the receptionist may return.
Room information says 24 hour food available (paninis, sandwiches, pizza) but receptionist told us she "doesn't cook".
Only one set of towels, despite booking double room for two people. No headboard on bed. Room clean and tidy.
Went for breakfast, no staff around, sat down and waited 15 mins before staff to appear. Could not wait around any longer for food to be prepared so a refund received.
Hotel could be OK if they just got more staff. You really should not have to go looking for staff to check in or to take your breakfast order.

national holidays trip to durham and Whitby visiting durham on Saturday then stayed at the st George hotel Darlington . surprised where you go to it seemed like some sort of industrial estate at first then eventually you get to the hotel right by the airport! .quickly sorted out to our rooms by friendly staff.the rooms are a bit tired with the decor but of a great size, me and my son had a twin room.there was a single bed and a kingsized bed both comfortable with plenty of pillows. downsides quite cool seemed liked double glazing not airtight? not enough plug sockets for 15 yr old boy !!! all in all an average stay . food adequate although time of meal was changed and not everyone was notified therefore a few angry guests(hungry guests!!)

Room Tip: room 28 was a great size single and kingsized beds

This hotel is the original home of the RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force) from WW2. So much more could be made from this but it is lacking with the odd picture dotted around and the coat of arms of the squadrons in the reception area. The staff are none existent, one girl on reception and the same girl manning the bar area needless to say one is often not manned whilst she deals with the other. There were two waiters on duty on the Saturday morning breakfast, so tables were not cleared away, no cutlery was available and they were not good at communicating with the guests. The breakfast options were sparse, cooked breakfast which looked like it had been there since the day before, cereal or toast with only butter or jam as an option. There were no condiments what so ever, so the food was bland. Sunday morning was a tad better but not much. There were manages available so the staff were left to deal with multiple complaints with no much training in how to deal with this.

Hi griffey
I am sorry that during your 2 night stay you did not visit the 2 museum rooms dedicated to the heroes who served at the building during the war as most of your other group thought it was very moving I am also sorry the choice of juices cereals egg bacon sausage mushrooms beans tomatoes and toast was in your opinion sparse I cannot comment on the problem at breakfast as yours is the only negative response we have received from the 110 guest's who stayed

Considering the price, the room was just about ok. No matter what you look at, the place just appears a bit run down. Staff was quite friendly, but dinner was nothing to write home for and breakfast certainly not worth the money either. Close proximity to the airport makes it a rather noisy place, that however stops late evening as the airport seems to be closed at night. If i really can't find another place to stay i may probably go there again, but there are quite a few better places nearby.

Hi Mike thankyou for your review I am surprised the airport kept you awake as the noise does not usually disturb guests due to the flights taking off and landing paths do not pass over the hotel Thank you for your comments about the staff
