The LLandudno hotels, where we had stayed before, were closed in January and we tried Four Oaks Hotel for the first time. It is in a marvelous position on the seafront, just a few hotels away from the theatre and adjacent to the town's swimming pool. The owners took over in April 2010 and run the hotel themselves with local staff. The hotel had a no vacancies sign and had two coach parties, as well as independent travellers staying there on the last week-end in January - too many cars for the car park.
The exterior looks in need of a coat of paint, but the reception rooms have been well decorated. There is a large old-fashioned lift. Both bedroom and bathroom were clean and there was plenty of storage space. All the bedrooms have en suite facilities. Our bathroom had a bath with a shower attached to the taps. There was no bath or pedestal mat and the towels were not changed during our stay. Neither was a hair dryer provided, but one could be borrowed from reception. There was no central heating in the bedroom, but a wall mounted electric fire that heated the room well. A large kettle and teapot were provided for making tea, but there were no biscuits. The small wall mounted television had no remote control, but one could be hired from reception for £5. The hotel information was fastened to the bedroom door and included a request not to smoke in bed. However, on the dressing table was a notice that, if you've beeen smoking in your room, you would be reported to the management, issued with £100 cleaning bill and asked to leave the hotel.
Meals were at set times, 8.45am for breakfast and 6.30pm for dinner, although some people arrived later. There seemed to be a problem for people, who were going to the theatre. On the Friday evening the tables were still being laid at 6.30. Ten minutes later guests were admitted, but the lady in charge of seating had no table plan. It was 7 o'clock before our waitress took our order. One couple, who had theatre tickets, had to leave part way through the meal (although they had said they had apparently said they needed to leave)..
The food was generally good although the plaice was dry and there were no sauces or dressings to accompany the fish, vegetables and potatoes. Portions of cereal were generous- the porridge was very good-, but the full Welsh breakfast was on the small side with one rasher of bacon and one sausage. Bread was invariably white and seved with butter.
The entertainment seemed to be enjoyed by most people. There was an Elvis style singer on the Friday evening and a 1940s songs and reminiscences on the Saturday. Viewing was a problem, as the outer sitting room had archways, where people were standing and blocking the views of those who were sitting down.
A selection of tabloid newspapers was on sale each morning with a trust box for payment.
Some guests said that they had stayed regularly at this hotel for many years. We intend to stay there again. We had booked through Travelstyle (self drive) and paid £65 per person for dinner, bed and breakfast for two nights.
