“oldies abroad nonsense”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 May 2012

I have been staying at Rainbow Paradise Hotel for 6 years going twice yearly and staying for 6 weeks each time and I really don't understand what Oldies abroad is complaining about. I have stayed at the same time as he did and did not feel put out at all having to move for one day only during my stay as there was plenty of room and staff provided sun shade umbrella's so no one had to sit in the direct sun unless they wanted too. Oldies abroad has been going to Paradise Hotel for a lot of years so things can't be that bad or else he would be looking for somewhere else to stay. Staff there are excellent and very friendly, they go out of their way to help. I will be going to stay there next year and I'm sure I will see Oldies abroad there again also

I was astonished to read the report on the Rainbow Paradise hotel from Oldies Abroad. I have been to this hotel on 17 ocassions over the past 9 years. The Paradise hotel like many large hotels throughout the world can not survive on tourist trade alone. There are times when we are politely requested to clear an area of the hotel gardens to erect tentage for a wedding or a corporate function. There are adequate other areas around the hotel with shade. Oldies abroad said he was asked to move three times during his stay, but conveniently forgot to mention that this was over a three month period, hardly excessive! During the first three months of the year, most hotels in Penang are occupied by Long Stay Guests who stay anything from 3 weeks to 5 months at a greatly reduced room rate and I don't believe that the ocassional request to vacate an area of the hotel grounds unacceptable. Oldies abroad is in a minority of a few who will find anything to complain about. Don't take any notice of his review. The chances are he has already booked to go back to Rainbow Paradise later this year or early in 2013.

Up on the 23rd floor the view of the sea was magnificent varying from misty morning views of distant Malaysian coast and hills, small fishing craft and the occasional cargo vessel. This was our fourth visit to Penang staying in a variety of accommodation from apartments to expensive hotels. Paradise Sandy Beach Resort was not expensive suiting our three week stay for dental treatment and giving us a much needed break from work. The room was excellent without being ostentatious with a comfortable firm bed and with a wide balcony and a view to die for. My wife and I were very comfortable. The design of the resort afforted all rooms with views and a big plus, the three lifts did not break down once. The lobby is large, well designed in a colonade style with columns providing a canopy down to the lower restaurant. The food at the hotel while more expensive than street restaurants was not overpriced and generally good value for money. Even the local street restaurants were excellent with a variety of culinary styles from Indian to German. The Indian, directly accross the road was brilliant. The resort has a good pool and a small proportion of beach. However the sea has a jellyfish warning attached. The staff are friendly and when they get to know you very helpful, fun loving people who give good advice when needed. Two points the hotel needs to work on, updating wifi and broadband facilities and getting a larger range of television channels to suit the variety of races that come to enjoy the hotel.

Room Tip: They seem to get a great many electric storms so higher floors might not suit those with sensitive h...

We have been coming to the Paradise, now known as The Rainbow Paradise Beach Resort for the past 8 years. Up to this year it has been very nice, meeting up with old friends and indeed making new ones. A lot of these friends we keep in touch with outside of the hotel, not only from the Uk but Australia and Europe to.
But this year has been unbearable, the hotel should be re-classified as a conferance and events centre, as they have more and more companies using it as a meeting place. Don't get me wrong I am not opposed to this providing is does not interfear with the guests enjoyment and being able to relax in the hotel gardens. This year alone we have had to be moved three times to allow tents to be erected over the whole of the garden area, so if one wants to relax you have to find an area on the beach with very little shade. The management are fully aware of this and are not concerned as we are constantly complaining and it is getting to the stage were we are probably making a nuisance of ourselves and we did not intend this initially.
Times such as these we have had no alternative but to leave the hotel and take a trip in to town just to get some peace, trips we do not want to take, we are quite content to relax in the grounds.

Room Tip: Rooms on the evens are best in our opinion. 25th Floor are the quitest, beach end more quiter.

Perhaps we should have asked to have a room on a lower floor - the views from our balcony on the 24th floor weren't that good and I'd hate to think how we would ever have got out safely if there had been a fire! Other guest in the lifts had asked not be any higher than the 4th floor - something we will bear in mind for the future! Whilst the staff were all very amenable, the facilities weren't so great - an extremely small pool - unusually full of men, which I personally found rather intimidating. We decided to go out to eat, since the choice in the hotel did not look very appealing - so glad we did, since the breakfast was the worst that we had on our whole trip round Malaysia! If you do stay here, visit the amazing Indian restaurant on the opposite side of the road!
