The Hanseatic is in a perfect location for walking throughout Bergen - taking the nearby tram to a beautiful lookout point, walking the waterfront, the old town, and to museums and the heart of the city. Our rooms (our group booked 3 superior-type rooms) were adequately roomy and the baths newly remodeled. Our rooms had blackout curtains that worked well. Breakfast was well provisioned with good variety. The staff we made contact with were polite and accommodating.

However, the 'perfect location' had a significant downside - mentioned in another recent review: the long summer nights with partying crowds outside our windows until 3 or 4 AM, and no air conditioning during a summer heat wave. The ear plugs provided in our bathroom should have been a clue. Our travel agent (we had requested booking in this specific hotel) did not know that the rooms weren't air conditioned, or about the night revelers, which seems a usual nightly event, not an exception (we were there for 3 nights over a weekend, but we were led to believe it's a months' long happening, and then there was the presence of ear plugs in our rooms). Sleep was intermittent and illusive.

If you want to be partying in a fun, safe place into the wee hours, and/or have no trouble sleeping through a concert or parade, you'll be more than happy with this hotel. Otherwise, probably best to book here in winter - they do have electric heat in each room.

Room Tip: In summer, Pre book a 'back room' that's the quietest in the hotel, and request a fan.

Perfect place for us. Location ideal for walking to restaurants, harbor and train station!
Rooms super charming with lots of character and very friendly staff
Staff suggested restaurants for each of our three nights— all were just what we were hoping for
Would certainly return and we highly recommend

The first room I was given with my friend was 451. Make sure you don’t get this room. It’s in the attic! Hot, stale, and the ceiling is slanted. You have to climb a set of narrow spiral stairs to access it. BTW, no porters. You carry your own luggage. It reminded us of Anne Frank’s attic. We had to stay in that room one night b/c no other rooms were available. The next day we got 341. It was better, but having just been to The Thief in Oslo this hotel was too expensive. It’s in the city center but there’s no amenities. Soap bars are the size of tootsie rolls. We had to go buy soap from the store. I wasn’t impressed. I stayed at The Scandic Ornen. It was more reasonable and everything was within walking distance.

Stayed 2 nights at this historic wooden hotel in old Brygen. Location is superb, a block from fish market. Lots of history at this place make it a fascinating story. The rooms are cozy and charming with some original finishes showing their age a bit - and sloping- but that adds to the feel... finding a good spot in central Bergen that is affordable is tough, and this place

This Hotel was excellent in that it cozy and right in the Heart of Bergen. We selected the Hotel since its in Walking Distance to Cruise Boat Piers. You can cross the street and go to the Hanseatic Museum as well.. We would recommend it if you want to be in the Heart of Bergen.
