If you want to see Historic Bergen, you are never too far away from the area to walk. The hotel offers complimentary breakfast in the morning with a great variety of options. The room is a little bigger than what we had in Oslo but still pretty basic. The hotel reception is on two sides of the street so it is your best guess as to which one you should check into. We stayed opposite from where the breakfast was served and there was only someone manning that desk intermittently. Bergen harbor was overrun with cruise ships and can be very crowded and busy. This hotel is away from the crowds in the harbor.

On the basis of a rapid glance at traveler's reviews of the Scandic City hotel, my expectations weren't very high. As participant in a European researcher's conference held at the hotel, I decided to take a chance rather than search elsewhere and I wasn't disappointed. In particular the excellent catering section effortlessly provided very high quality meals and snacks (with lots of cakes, etc.) for a group of around 400 people over three days. Breakfast was good too! As far as the rooms are concerned, I understand that there are several wings or buildings with different standards. My room was small, but the bed was comfortable and the working space was adequate. The bathroom was large and appeared to have been re-furbished relatively recently. However I was somewhat amazed by the awful design of the oversized toilet paper holder, which projected so far over the WC that it was almost impossible to sit down... A little revamping might be a good idea!

Room Tip: avoid room 422 if you want to sit on the toilet

We loved the Location of this hotel with easy walking to the Centre and a Cinema across the hotel. How with a little more training and discipline for the staff the experience could have been exceptional:
- The glass shower divider had a poor seal which meant the bathroom flooded after every shower. We informed staff but 2 days later by checkout it hadn't been fixed
- Hot chocolate finished at breakfast in the machine. We asked a staff member who said they would bring for us. When it didn't come and we reminded him he then said that they didn't have any. He didn't come and tell us so we were waiting
- The revolving door entrance triggers too early when approaching from the left, which means it hits you as you enter it
- Be ready for an ever present smell of fish in the lobby and restaurant!

The above could be easily addressed with sharper training of staff so they have both discipline and warmth. It is the attention to detail that is the difference between a good and great hotel. Hotel Scandic is within eyesight of this next level with a bit of effort.

when checking in asked for a double bed, i was informed that my room had been allocated and it couldn't be chanced. I asked why and the girl said because she didn't know how to change it.
my room was across the street, up a dodgy lift.
the bathroom was poor and well worn.
the bed was the most uncomfortable I have ever slept in.
On the plus side the breakfast was very good with a huge selection
