Magic Hotel Solheimsviken
Ranked #30 of 49 Hotels in Bergen
Reviewed 14 September 2017

This hotel was new and clean and the rooms were larger than many other places we stayed in Scandinavia.
Breakfast was good and the rooms were quiet at night.
The hotel is not in a great location though, it's a 10 min bus journey away from the city centre and then another 5-10 mins walk up a hill after that. The distance did not bother us but the route was under an underpass and through an area of town that we would have rather not be going through at night.

Room Tip: d a room on the top floor which had a nice view of the funicular an was quiet at night

This hotel is really a ultra designed modern hotel not very easy on the eyes with the design of walls and carpet staff really pleasant and also a very nice brecky what a fab place Bergen is loved the old fishing part on the front and we dined in one of the restaurants there in the evening a very busy big city, shame we didn't have enough time to see the city so it's a must to return

The hotel itself was ok. Really average for Norway, I suppose.
A parking lot is only available in a parking house about 200 m away (if you have to carry your luggage).
Also the distance to the city centre did bother me quite a lot. But that was something which I could have researched before.
The area in which the hotel is situated is more of an industrial area.
The breakfast was good. The rooms really basic and supposed to be modern? I just found them weird and unpractical.

However as we wanted to stay a night longer they said they would have rooms available (we were there in September… there was literally nobody else but us), but the rate increased! They demanded the double rate from us. This (and the 160kr. for parking) was just a bit too much for us, compared to the service delivered.
So we left.

View: We paid for a room with a view and the view was of a row of houses, and the top of the mountain if you pushed your face right up against the window. Sad!

Room: No telephone or safe but size wise okay. Great shower.

Cleanliness: We arrived and there was hair everywhere in the toilet, which stayed there for a couple of days. Carpet was nasty, full of stains and hair so guessing they've never hoovered. Dust all over the furniture, they never cleaned it in the time we were there. There was mud in the bedsheets but they never changed the sheets. The only thing they did was tidy up the duvet covers and change towels.

Food: Breakfast buffet was good, an okay selection of food and beverages.

BIG ISSUE: not enough tables (around 30 for around 200 rooms)! If there is no room you get to eat standing up or outside in the cold where the tables are covered in pigeon poop (not kidding). We were also knackered one night after a 5 hour hike and tried to have dinner in the restaurant but they were all booked with a special event. If you want room service you need to go up to the restaurant, ask for the food and collect it yourself (no phone in rooms!) but you can't on a Sunday because they're closed.

Service: Staff are really friendly and polite always with a smile on their faces. They're not so good at providing information about things to do in the area or delivering information which is their main role

Location: Not great if you want quick access to the main part of the city, perhaps a 25 min walk although there is an option of the light rail/tram (takes around 10 mins) but very close to Løverstakken for hiking purposes

Our small group had a 2 night stay at Magic Hotel on our travels around Norway. After a long wait at Reception (only one staff member available), the staff provided a local information guide and map upon arrival without request, which was a nice touch and good for promoting things to do in the area.

The room and bathroom size was good. The room design aims to add character, but instead added a layer of dirtiness, as some nooks/corners are clearly too hard for the staff to clean and we discovered a number of areas of the room that were not clean. Sadly our room had a very poor internal courtyard and rubbish bin view.

Parking is available on site in an underground carpark (at a cost). There is free parking on the surrounding streets if you find it, but staff will tell you that you can't park there - locals told us otherwise! And a car is recommended. Also there is a toll when driving between the hotel and town to factor in. There is a supermarket downstairs which was great.

There is a self serve laundry facility onsite (level 3) which was a real bonus; although for the size of the hotel, it would be recommended to increase the number of machines as there were often people waiting for long periods of time.

Breakfast experience was very poor. The size of the space available is insufficient and it took more than 15 minutes to wait for a table, which ended up being outside surrounded by smokers. Then the quantity and quality of food available was poor. This was our biggest let down from our stay.

Overall the stay was a mixed bag, but nothing go put us off of thinking about staying at the hotel again, although we would likely book somewhere in the town to be able to further maximise the opportunity to experience it.

Room Tip: Self serve laundry; get to breakfast early!

Hi AUSLion!
First off all, thanks for your great feedback, we will use all your comments to make things better for our guest.
There is some free parking on the surrounding streets, but most of them are for the houses. And our staff cannot give wrong information, so that our guest risk a parking fine.
About the laundry facility , we will evaluate this.
I will also give your feedback to the restaurant about the breakfast.
Hope to welcome you back at us Magic Hotel Solheimsviken.
