Emanuel Vigelands mausole is oslo's most secret art-experience. Just a couple of opening hours every sunday, hidden amongst villas on the West - the building and paintings on the wall gives you a sacral meeting with death and fear of ones mind - and the cremated artist is among us inside there.

Not for everyone, but we went there as a family (9 year old girl in tow), took our time as suggested and were rewarded with a fascinating experience. It is only one room, the paintings and sculptures are rather graphic (depicting the cycle of life, from conception to death) and we spent about an hour adjusting to the low light environment and discovering new things.
If you like to scratch below the surface of art, this is your place.
Open on Sundays only. You can get there on public transit and a 15 minute walk through a residential area.

A stunning experience, total quiteness, existencial experience, erotic images, stay for at least so long tha your eyes get accostomised to the dark and so that all the art appears. The museum is open only on Sunday afternoons, so plan your trip!

This place is just amazing... and it improves if (a) you stick to the 'rules' of entry whilst in the museum (NB: whispering = talking, guys!) and (b) you stay there for longer than you might at first think is worth your while: I stayed for well over an hour, and was rewarded for my time... it just keeps on changing.
Cannot imagine how incredible it would be to hear live music here!
Lovely 'staff', too - very enthusiastic about the museum, and willing to provide all the information you need. Make sure to get there - assuming you're in town on a Sunday afternoon! It's easy accessible by bus and metro (but if you get the metro, be sure to go the right way - not along Risallen!)
This was the most wonderful and also deeply relaxing place to visit... the silence was truly remarkable, and the weird acoustics combined with the fascinating artwork was just unique. Do visit.
