Description: You can find the Salzamt in the heart of the ,Bermuda Triangle'. It has been said that the Salzamt was the starting point of the Viennese Nightlife area (Bermuda Dreieck). The architect Herman Czech created this elegant and functional but playful space in 1983. White table cloths stretch throughout the dining area surrounded by wooden benches and Art - Deco chandeliers. The bar tempts with dimed lights and leather sofas to lounge in, creating a feeling of timelessness. On the daily handwritten menu one can find bistrot classics such as Vitello Tonnato or Beef Tatare but Viennese specialities like veal ,Wiener Schnitzel', Tafelspitz, diverse Gulash's as well international and eastern European dishes. There is a wide variety of Austrian and international wines with focus on the Bründlmayer in Kamptal. The beer selection features Viennese pils, Czech beer and white beer. Further fruit juices, fine spirits and local schnaps are on the drinks menu. In summer you can enjoy the outside seating on the calm and charming Ruprechtsplatz next to the oldest church in Vienna overlooking the Danube canal. Until 1824 the Salzamt was located here. The salt office was the salt taxing authority of the Habsburg monarchy. Today Salzamt is known as a meeting point for the arts and media scene and other luminaries, who enjoy this unpretentious place. If you want to dine and drink in a cozy atmosphere the Salzamt will take care of you.

Just back after a dinner at this nice restaurant. It was just what we wanted today - delicious simple local food in a lovely non-touristic place. The menu is not large but you still have a good choice, staff is helpful and friendly, and service is fast. We will definitely be back here again during our next stay in Vienna

We passed by Salzamt by chance, looking for a place to have dinner. Had a very nice evening, starting with a drink at the bar (very good glass of wine), and afterwards a three-course menu, which was excellent. Good austrian food, and reasonable prices. The staff was friendly, responded fast and was there when we needed them. For sure a restaurant we will go to more often in the future, and which we recommend!!

Salzamt is the rare classic restaurant in the center of Vienna that maintains it's insider 'stammgast" feeling but welcomes all. Surprisingly also, although in the Bermuda Triangle bar zone, it is devoid of tourists. Classic interior design and perfectly tuned and experienced waiters round out the experience of dining on high quality traditional austro-boho cuisine paired with excellent Austrian wine - it's always a great evening and warm feeling. I go often and my last dinner with friends was no different. An enduring insider spot, highly recommended.

Went here in November 2011 with two friends. We were beautifully looked after in traditional, attractive surroundings, and had fantastic food - the steak tartare in particular was pure perfection. Highly recommended.

I have been looking for a place like this in Vienna; with real good food, unpretentious, non-touristy, with the Viennese charm and without any glitter added. The service was warm and welcoming, I felt we could stay there all day (we came for early lunch and stayed until 6 PM!) and tried out 5 different dishes! Massive portions, great value for money. The perfect viennese restaurant!
