This is a rokoko facade building and an old pharmaca inside as it was centuries before. Of course it is not a museum, you can get everything you need from a pharmacy. It is wirth just to drop in.

This is one of the wonderful surprises Salzburg offers: a real, modern pharmacy, where you can get your prescriptions filled or buy over the counter meds - but step inside and you find yourself in a 17th century pharmacy. Check one of the other reviews for pictures of the interior to see what I mean.

Even if you don't need pharmacy goods, visit the Alte furst erzbischoefliche Hofapotheke (the name is the equivalent to "court pharmacy by appointment by the prince archbishop" and peak inside. It is located in a charming square, around the corner from the cathedral and the prince archbishop's residence and steps away from the Getreidegasse.

I would have never found this one if I had not suffered from sun allergy and needed some medicin. The staff is very friendly, its interior geargiously antique, so this is no museum but a pharmacy in working order... At least 3 locations are known: late 16th century in the Getreidegasse number 9 (also known as Mozart's birthplace), 1588 was owner Chunrad Fröschlmoser purveyor granted the title "Hofapotheke". Heinrich Merody bought this royal pharmacy in 1591 and moved into a house opposite the residence. Only four years later Merody withdrew himself from the business due to old age and sold it to Onophrius Mony, a close friend of Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, with whom he remained friends even after the archbishop’s imprisonment at Fort Hohensalzburg. His public criticism towards Salzburg City also brought Mony temporary custody, but he retained the Hofapotheke. After a turbulent history the pharmacy was taken over in 1875 by Dr. Wenzel Adalbert Sedlitzky, then in 1910 it moved to its current location Alter Markt 6, a building with a 19th century neo-classical facade in the “Wiener Plattenstil”. (according to drawings of Johann Georg Laschensky). Interwar period taken over by Leo Biskup, whose family currently still operate the pharmacy.
