“Nice Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 October 2011

For fans of "The Sound of Music" this is a no-brainer. Reasonably priced and not "touristy", with nice enough breakfast, room quality, and service that goes along with staying here. A 5-minute walk delivers you to the bus which will take you to the center of Salzburg in 5 stops. Very helpful with maps and suggestions was Christopher, who greeted us at the front door. Willing to answer questions and talk about the lives of the famous family. Free parking out front, located in a quiet neighborhood. Stairs and elevator available. Stayed in the oldest daughters room, who was portrayed as Liesel but that wasn't her name in real life.

Staff not available 24 hours. Had internet trouble in the common area, and if someone was available to point us in the right direction we could have accessed their network to plan our next stay at night instead of taking time in the morning.

Room Tip: The room we stayed in was nice, but others that we looked at were nice too.

Villa Trapp is a trap. I timely cancelled my July 24-26, 2011 booking as early as July 12, 2011. But Villa Trapp still charged me the full amount of EUR 312. When I emailed them the cancellation confirmation, they promised to refund the erroneous charge to my Master Card. But until now, three long months after, they still have not refunded me. I wrote them a letter requesting a copy of the email confirmation of their refund payment to my Master Card to prove that indeed they have refunded me, but they have been ignoring my emails. They are unresponsive and evasive especially when you are asking for a refund. This is clearly unfair business practice. May this serve as fair warning to all. May you never have go through the trap I have been caught in ...

My daughter and I stayed here and at Schloss Leopoldskron (adjacent grounds were used in filming of S.O.M.) because of our love of Maria von Trapp and the Sound of Music. We were excitedly anticipating the warm welcome of the proprietors and the tour, both of which we had heard so much. Instead, one of the owners pointed us to the room and said the nearest restaurant was a "stroll" away (only if you don't mind to walk about 45 minutes). No telephone in the room. No water glasses - and we were looked at rather strangely (as if we were imposing) for requesting them. The room was very comfortable, but as one reader commented, the villa lacked atmosphere. Lovely on the outside, it lacks homey warmth on the inside. On the other hand, do be aware that it gets physically warm if you plan to be there in the summer. We were there at the end of May and it got pretty warm - no fans. Although staying in the vonTrapp home was a dream come true, it would have been much nicer (especially for the money) if even a simple touch such as cookies and tea had been offered (since there is absolutely nowhere close by to purchase anything) or if a few more tables and chairs were placed outside. One woman monopolized the single tea table and chair so that no one else could enjoy the backyard view. The breakfast food was average. Christopher did his Sound of Music talk as we ate. Our trip was in the summer of 2010, I am late posting.

I visit Salzburg once a year and usually stay in Old city. This time accidentally I found Villa Trapp and stayed 2 nights. First of all, those who stay here must understand that Villa is not a hotel. Office is closed after 7p.m and no function like hotel after that. Staff are friendly but room I stayed was rather small and heating was not enough. Therefore,I caught cold on my 1st day.

We stayed here one night on our visit to Salzburg. I am not sure what we were expecting. The prices are reasonable and one cannot fault the hotel on comfort. If anything it lacked atmosphere. It is a modern fitted hotel in all respects so if you are expecting period piece rooms, this is not what you will find. We were welcome in a friendly style and fortunately my partner could speak German as English was not spoken (despite the web booking stating this was possible). The hotel is conveniently located within in 10 minutes drive from the centre of Salzburg. We decided to explore Salzburg for an early dinner but were home around 9pm by which time the house was already in total darkness. I guess this is where out feel of atmosphere comes from. As wireless is located in these areas one could not even make use of this really. One would expect of a hotel this size that the livingroom lights would be on – it certainly would have made the house feel a lot warmer and welcoming. Our room was a little bit disappointing to say the least. We were aware we had booked a small room and with that we were quite happy. Our dismay comes from the amount of long black hairs we found in the bedding and in the towels. They certainly need to focus on their laundry service – a change or improvement is required. Also bed covers with stains need to be replaced. A further concern is that our room was missing its smoke detector. The beds were however very comfortable. This is a good plus for the tired traveller. Perhaps I am a perfectionist, but in a hotel that positions itself in this market one would have expected a bit more warmth, attention to detail and personal care. In summation it was a comfortable stay, but one is left with the sense that they have forgotten that their primary purpose is that of a hotel and that this experience also needs to be delivered upon. We would recommend it purely for its convenience and value for money, however, with the cautionary that it may be less than what one would expect.

Room Tip: Some rooms are not en suite so keep this in mind when selecting a room - some have the bathroom loca...
