I had a very unimpressive day trip to Villach in uncomfortably humid weather. The best thing I did there was go up the St Jakob steeple for €2 ( free if I had a Kärntner card ). One of the easiest tall climbs to do due to very wide modern stairway for majority of ascent. Great views at top but not a lot to see of Villach itself....interesting that not allowed to go up one section when bells about to ring as may scare you so much you may fall down the stairs! Well, that was my poor translation for the reason for the traffic light control for that section of stairs....

We're a family of 3 history buffs who spent 5 days with Villach as a base for visiting Roman sites, medieval villages and churches. We had a private driver from European Focus Tours who skillfully navigated steep valley roads to get to out of the way places.

The area from Villach to St Jacob is about 30km. There is a cycling route and a local train line on which one can take a bicycle. Its a cycler's paradise, either normal tracks or mountain bike through the woods. One can start at the main station in Villach, and go via Warbard where there is one of the newest thermal spa and water fun centre. From here one can go via Gorderdorf, passing the old mill and the Finkenstein pasta factory. Continue along a road parel to the railway line until Finkenstein, From here one can choose a more scenic nature route through the moors until lake Faak am See. Otherwise there is a cycling track next to the main road which passes the golf course in Finkenstein. This main road continues to St Jacob with the panoramic Karavaken moutain range which borders Slovenia on the otherside. The pyramid shaped Mittages Kogel is an imposing mountain which struts out over looking the lake. Faak am See becomes moterbike haven during the largest Harley Davidson meeting in Europe during the first week of september. Other than this period it is a lovely area all year round each season offering a different prosective of the natural panorama of the area. Before Faak am See proceed straight towards Lachscach and Ledenizen. This is a wide vally between the moutnain ranges there are lots of charateristic farms along the way. There are a variety of activities to do in this area from golf, lake swimming, boat hire, canoe,Tennis, horse riding, treaking and a climbing school in Finkenstein. At the Post office in Finkenstien there is a tourist office for the area, The council has a number of free guided tours in the summer months. Barbara Muller is an expert on the area and an avid consevationist. She know everything from the water sources to off the beaten track walks. The tourist office provides free maps for cyclers, bikers and all tourists and information regarding accompained walks. For an activity holiday or a nature retreat and families its idea.
