Owner description: The unique architecture of Schloss Eggenberg, the most important great house in Styria, is a complex symbolic representation of the universe. At the same time, with its impressive combination of Baroque interiors (magnificent state rooms), magical gardens and park, and priceless collections of the Universalmuseum Joanneum (Alte Galerie with its old masters paintings, Archaeology Museum and Coin Cabinet), Eggenberg contains a fascinatingly varied panorama of Styrian culture over the centuries.UNESCO World Heritage Site!

Beautiful palace and gardens, the palace was unfortunately closed when I visited (november( but the gardens were well worth the 2 euros entrance. A bit of a walk (30 mins) from the Centre of Graz, but stop by a Hofer and grab some bread cheese and salami and make your own day out of it!

Schloss Eggenberg is very peaceful and historic place to wander. We went on a Sunday morning and spent about 2 and a half hours there. It was very easy to get to by tram. The building is very neat if you love architecture and interior decoration from the Baroque or Rococo period. It really is a great example of the two different styles as the ceilings of the main rooms remained Baroque while the walls were updated, which creates a marvelous snapshot in time. We took an English tour and had a great tour guide who explained the interesting history of the palace and the detail that went into creating it to mirror the Gregorian calendar. The Planetory Room was fantastic. Beyond the tour of the 24 staterooms, we enjoyed the art and the coin museums both in the main palace. We didn't have time to see the archeological museum located in the gardens though.

Tips:
- gardens and outer halls of the castle (and 1st and 2nd floors) are cheap: 1 euro for student and 2 euro for adult - definately reccomend
- visit gardens during the day
- we went on Friday during bussines hours and we were practically alone
- you can easily get there via public transport
- you can also bring your sandwiches and have a meal while sitting on a bench
- inner castle is open for tours only till 1.11.

This castle is very nice. Eventhought we couldn't go inside, we spent a couple of hours walking and taking pictures. The aufumn colors are amazing.
