Apartment 160 Both Worlds welcomed us on the 29th September to 6th October 2014. Years ago, my husband and I lost out on the purchase of one of these properties and because we like to cruise it took us years to swallow our pride and book a stay here.
We arrived at noon and owner, Carol, let us into the studio and explained all we needed to know for our stay, but all I could concentrate on was the view from our balcony and couldn't wait for our first sunset where we would be sat with glass in hand on our comfortable sun- loungers and finally unwind after months of hard work and me, recovering from a broken leg! I was glad the studio was situated at the top of the block for easy access. The beach had been improved since we were last here for a visit and the sand had been harrowed and was level and litter free. Very nice to sunbathe on. We were given a "welcome pack" of coffee, tea, sugar, milk, and a nice bottle of red wine. The kitchen was well equipped, the bathroom roomy for the size of the properties and there was a tv for those who can't go without, but we just loved to put on the radio and sit on the balcony- with that view!! One thing that did surprise me was how comfortable the bed was. I was pleased that it was a double bed and not a sofa bed, as many studios have. The access to the beach meant negotiating 86 steps or you could use a tarmac road at the far end of the complex. There is also a way via the stairwell through the apartment block, but that meant having the responsibility of keys, which we declined. The sea was a little too choppy to swim a couple of days and when we did go in it was cool but refreshing! Safe for swimming as it has a breakwater and also floatation buoys and ropes to section it off. We ate in town some times (good restaurants like "Gauchos" steakhouse) and self-catered some meals but kept it simple, shopping at Morrisons to which there is a regular bus service. To get around Gib it is best to use buses and these stop directly outside Both Worlds, running approx. half-hourly. The "Hoppa Buses". You but a ticket for £2.25pp and that gives you unlimited use in the same day. Most single journeys being £1.50 a time. I get the impression there isn't much room to park if you are thinking of hiring a car? Most days, we bussed into town and walked Main Street for the shopping! Duty frees galore! But one day we took the cable car to the top of the rock to see the cheeky monkeys and admire an even greater view to Morocco. The Alameda Gardens is lovely for a quiet stroll. We took a picnic there and later paid £5pp to visit the Wildlife Park inside the gardens: apes, reptiles, exotic birds, pot-bellied pig, and I believe that most of these animals were rescued after abandonment?
Another bus trip (all are quite short 10 mins or so as the Rock is small) took us to Europa Point. A lighthouse and a lovely promenade area with a café and restrooms facility. Although E.P. is within walking distance from Both Worlds the southerly way round they discourage it as you have to pass through a tunnel and traffic is quite fast there. So I recommend taking the bus.
Eating out? We found a little Moroccan place up a narrow street, "Tagin" and we had lamb tagine, chicken kebab and a tomato salad (hubby had a beer). all for £19. "Gauchos" at Casemates was the most expensive but the meal was exceptional! They serve the steak how you like it and it comes with a hot slab of volcanic rock so that you can cook it a little more and keep each mouthful hot- it takes time to eat the full steak and savour every delicious piece! Argentinian cooking at it's best!! With salmon and shrimp starters, steaks, sides ,desserts (fantastic homemade ice creams) and a couple of glasses of wine each the bill was £76. Dining at the other end of the scale but just as delicious, inside Casemates, "the Little Rock". Friday Tapas menu only £2.50 a plate, fresh and tasty.
We'd take the last bus home (9pm) to finish our evening on our romantic balcony, or if we stayed out late we'd take a taxi, £6. Friday night was best in the Square as there was a guitar duo at "Little Rock", playing best of Eagles, Guns n Roses, current rock and the act was very capable and not "over-grungey". I think the thing which stood out for me , though, was the location and feel of the studio. it was everything you'd expect for a romantic break yet not too far from amenities. A bit of traffic passed by the complex, but the only noise really was from the breaking waves and the cawing gulls. I can't wait to go back next year!! "Thank you Carol S for the loan of your little bijou on the Rock."
