“From great potential to complete disappointment.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 January 2012

Having read the previous reviews about the hotel, I thought it can't really be that bad and still be 4 star!! Well I shouldn't have doubted the previous reviewers because its everything they reported.
I was there on New Years evening with a promising menu for their Gala Dinner. As the hotel has a good range of "chill-out" facilities we decided to arrive early and start off the evening by using the Sauna, Jacuzzi and swimming pool. Apart from taking a long time to get hot, the Sauna was fine. The Jacuzzi however is not a tub as expected but a large bath, fine for one but if you intend to be social, then it will be cozy....
However the main reason for going to the hotel was the evenings entertainment and Gala Dinner and that's where the problem started. We had to wait over an hour to order wine and another 30 minutes after that for the dinner options to be taken. Eventually the dinner arrived and once on the table the food was surprisingly hot and tasty. However as the evening wore on the service just got worse, not due to the number of diners, but due to the incompetence of the staff. The one saving grace of the whole evening was the entertainer who worked hard and kept peoples spirits high and amused.
The hotel itself was originally built in 1937 and although in its day no doubt one of the best in the island, those days have long gone. All of the really good hotels are based close to the sea and hotels in the mountains are rare on the island and I'm sure this is why this hotel survives. The decor is dated in both the rooms and pubic areas, and in need of a make over. The staff are friendly but incompetent and a little reminiscent of Faulty Towers...
Being in the mountains you must have a car, but parking near the hotel is limited and on a sharp incline and so unless you're able bodied access could be problem.
On reflection the best was the food and the hotel location, but they need to become more professional in handling their clients if they want to keep their 4 star rating and less like an amateur run b&b.

This hotel is what you can call a get away... Not nicely decorated, not wellpreserved, needs a really good renovation. Especially some rooms of the old part of the hotel are a bit dissapointing. Still it offers the warmth you seek on a get away to the mountains, a home like feeling with the fireplace and the good service and having in mind that there is almost nowhere to go by night (at least in the winter), you enjoy staying in the hotels bar, restaurant or by the fireplace with good company. I mostly choose this hotel in the winter although i consider it a bit overpriced.

This hotel sitis high in Platres and has striking views across the mountains to the sea.

The hotel itself is clean and welcoming but seems to be aimed more at the elderly guest as I saw no evidence of the younger (29-60) age range whilst there. The rooms a clean and comfortable and the food is very good. Staff are very helpful and are welcoming. You willneed a car if you stay at this hotel as the driveway is long and steep and apart from Platres itself you are miles from anywhere. I would recommend this hotel if you are looking for a quiet holiday.

We stayed here for 1 night during our 2 week honeymoon in September 2011.

The hotel itself was average; I would guess that it retains its 4 star rating because it does have quite a lot of facilities- tennis courts, indoor and outdoor pools, a bar, restaurant and cafeteria- but as people have said the rooms are in need of modernising and as such, they're not what I would have expected from a 4 star.

That said, the location was perfect. Just a 10 minute stroll to the first taverna in the village of platres, and a few more minutes to the centre of the village. It was a shame that so many of the guests seemed to stay in the hotel bar and restaurant as these seemed overpriced and without atmosphere.

We loved the pool, it was spotlessly clean, there seemed lots of sunbeds and the pool area was surrounded by trees, making it feel secluded and peaceful.

We were only there for one night so didn't have chance to do much, but its ideally located for walking and cycling, or exploring by jeep. There isn't much to do for children, and the access isn't good for wheelchair users or anyone that struggles with steps.

If you're staying here for a few days, and want to get out and about, it's in a great location with a beautiful pool to relax by at the end of the day. If you're hoping to spend most of the day in the hotel, you'll probably be disappointed.
