Having read the previous reviews about the hotel, I thought it can't really be that bad and still be 4 star!! Well I shouldn't have doubted the previous reviewers because its everything they reported.
I was there on New Years evening with a promising menu for their Gala Dinner. As the hotel has a good range of "chill-out" facilities we decided to arrive early and start off the evening by using the Sauna, Jacuzzi and swimming pool. Apart from taking a long time to get hot, the Sauna was fine. The Jacuzzi however is not a tub as expected but a large bath, fine for one but if you intend to be social, then it will be cozy....
However the main reason for going to the hotel was the evenings entertainment and Gala Dinner and that's where the problem started. We had to wait over an hour to order wine and another 30 minutes after that for the dinner options to be taken. Eventually the dinner arrived and once on the table the food was surprisingly hot and tasty. However as the evening wore on the service just got worse, not due to the number of diners, but due to the incompetence of the staff. The one saving grace of the whole evening was the entertainer who worked hard and kept peoples spirits high and amused.
The hotel itself was originally built in 1937 and although in its day no doubt one of the best in the island, those days have long gone. All of the really good hotels are based close to the sea and hotels in the mountains are rare on the island and I'm sure this is why this hotel survives. The decor is dated in both the rooms and pubic areas, and in need of a make over. The staff are friendly but incompetent and a little reminiscent of Faulty Towers...
Being in the mountains you must have a car, but parking near the hotel is limited and on a sharp incline and so unless you're able bodied access could be problem.
On reflection the best was the food and the hotel location, but they need to become more professional in handling their clients if they want to keep their 4 star rating and less like an amateur run b&b.
