“Great place!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 May 2011

Great, cheap hostel! Yes, all the facilities are old, but Coronation Guesthouse has got it's own spirit - partly because of a really very kind and helpful manager (he treats you not like a next tourist or visitor, but like a guest), partly because you feel history inside and outside (great views on churches and bay from old wooden terraces). It has its own charm.

THE cheapest place to stay in World Heritage city of Valletta, chock full of history and peopled by the friendliest inhabitants I have come across in twenty years of travelling. New shower and toilet and lots of freshly painted rooms since previous reviews, super friendly and helpful manager, good atmosphere and great views of old city and Marsamxett Bay.

I was teaching in Sliema and San Gwan for 2 months and lived at the Coronation House. The worst was no AC. They gave me a fan since I was there for so long, but it wasn't enough in the summer there. I return semi-frequently to Malta, and in the winter, it is cold so Coronation would be okay if I hadn't found another place to stay. The bathrooms and showers are at best, old style hostel--ALWAYS WERE SHOWER SHOES, and have your own soap etc.--like a hostel. One other occupant came every year for the entire summer--and the family that owns it are really good people--the small son, and the wife who is French and very lovely...as well as Charlie. They don't have the funds to do what they would like--including laundry facilities, but they try.
As far as roaches etc, that is life in places of high humidity...and no matter how clean or how fast they are picked up, they beat you.
The best for me was going 'virtually next door' to the British Legion Bar run by Jan and Vic Briffa. She is one of the most wonderul people around and you can hang out there all you want and watch TV with her. She is a dear and so is Pepe, the dog. The place is a disaster but they are allowed to do anything to it--some lease something or other. But the beer is cold, and the place is quiet...and both places are steps away from the main street.
I cannot say I would stay at Coronation House again--not with others close and cleaner and with AC, but the people there at at the BL are jewels.

Booked this hotel knowing that it fit the budget (5.50 Lira pp per night) and that it was a great location. A five minute walk to the Valletta bus station and two minute walk to Republic Street. In those aspects is was a good choice.

The hotel itself was substandard, even for budget accomadations. The shared facilities were deplorable. The toilet had a set of instructions on how to flush it, though embarassingly no one seemed able to get it to do so (to be honest there was an alternate down the hall, which worked better, when vacant). Posted was, "WASH YOUR HANDS," though there wasn't any soap. Worse still, were the showers, which invariably had a dead cockroach (sometimes two), with thick mold in the crevices, and a filthy, threadbare mop in the corner. Trying to keep your feet from touching the floor is challenge. Bring shower sandals!

The room was pretty in pink (walls, ceiling, furniture, and bedding). There was an extensive balcony with a good view facing the Mount Carmel church and a view toward Sliema. Other than other peoples pubes in my sheets, the room itself was nice. (We slept in our clothes).

It wouldn't be unfair to review this hotel without mentioning the good will of the proprietor. We would see him in the morning when he served coffee. He was very kind and went out of his way to ensure that we had a good time Malta.

We ended up getting used to place (except for the showers) and stayed the entire nine nights we were in Malta. I would recommend first looking into the other guesthouses in Malta or even staying in Sliema. Its no big issue getting to Valletta from Sliema.

  • Liked — The balcony and views. The owner.
  • Disliked — Dirty linens, Filthy showers and toilets.

One of the wost places I've ever stayed. Picture this...

Small closet size room. Power blue walls and furniture. NO, not the floor its more dirt than anything. Crusty, rusty Sink. small single bed with a fan. NO AC

The room looks almost like one of the ruins of WWII. (It hasn't been clean since WWII either).

Don't open your eyes yet.... You must share water closets and showers with at least a dozen others...which haven't been clean since the first WW!

I didn't get much sleep that night (I can't believe I stayed but I already paid!).

Its the place of MY Nightmares! RUN!!!!!!!

  • Liked — I used to like the color powder blue before I stayed here!
  • Disliked — Everything!!!!!!
