We visited the national museum with our 15 and 13 year old children. The museum has an impressive collection and a lot of information, but compared to most modern museums (including several in Reykjavik) it has little interactive content. This made it difficult to hold the attention of a couple of teenagers.

The story of Iceland is fascinating, but the museum didn’t feel like it had a really strong narrative thread. It felt more like snippets of history were used to give context to the pieces in the collection, rather than the pieces in the collection being used to illustrate the history.

I found the second floor more interesting than the first, but by the time we got there I’m sad to say that the attention of two teenagers had gone!

I am certain that the museum is brilliant for those who have time and don’t have two teenagers with them - I just wouldn’t really recommend it if you’re there as a family.

This place offers a great insight into the very beginnings of inhabitation of Iceland up to present day. Some wonderful exhibits.

A few spoken word exhibits available in both Icelandic and English. I enjoyed most of these.

Marked down as I thought it was quite expensive although under 18s are free.

If you want to learn about Iceland and their history, this is the stop for you. I probably spent a couple of hours going through everything. Learned a lot, and really enjoyed all the displays. Seemed like everything was pretty well covered from the Vikings to politics to religion.

Kids will love exploring the past in one of 3 rooms designed especially for them to explore, whether it be dressing up in medieval suits of armor or reviewing libraries of old. You can even sneak away and check out a few exhibits yourself while they are entertained!

The museum has a lot of great and interesting information about Iceland's history and heritage.

All coats and bags must be placed in lockers on the lower/basement level before you can see the exhibits, which was nice as we were able to walk more freely.

The layouts of the 3 floors though, was a bit confusing, not knowing where to start or end so we were just randomly walking around reading information. Some of the display cases were poorly lit.

The admission fee is 2000 ISK for adults, and free with the Reykjavik City Card. If it wasn't for the card, we would not have paid to see this.
