Charming little place in a fabulous location!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 21 May 2019
A quaint little place which is clean and comfortable and in a fantastic location with easy access to Jokulsarlon, diamond beach and is also a pick-up point for some of the glacier activities (glacier walks, ice cave tours, etc.)
There are a couple of restaurants at a walkable distance, too. Will consider staying here again.

Very practical & clean hostel in a perfect location for driving to touristic spots.

Location: in Hali farm. From Route 1, you will see a sign of the farm. As a reference, beside the route 1, there is a museum with a wall of book covers, that is Hali. I could never understand it very well, but the hostel is in Hofn, not sure if is a Municipality, because Hofn the town is almost 66 km apart (55 minutes approx.) or what but be careful if you are looking to stay in/close to Hofn the town.

Service: we arrived around 7 pm, coming from Svartifoss (less than 1 hour / 70 km) and Toppa (I hope I wrote it correctly) received us. All the time with a natural smile in her face, she realized that we were from México and she told us she used to live in there a long time ago. She explained everything to us without problem. One thing that I really appreciated was that 1 week prior our arrival, the hostel sent us an e-mail (screenshot) that any other hotel from Iceland did: they point out that charges were done correctly, what was included and what not, how to arrive and some practical advices. This small detail most of the times make a big difference.

Room: enough space for 1 night or more if you are not going to stay in the room; just what you need as a base to explore part of the southern region. They have rooms for 2, 3 or 4 people; all beds seem to be individual however very comfortable. We also stayed during winter, and the hostel was incredible warm inside. All rooms shared bathroom, but in the room, you have your own wash basin. In the lower floor there was a complete bathroom and a bathroom just with the toilet, not remember if there was another bathroom in the second floor.

Facilities: the dining area is small and just 4 people make you feel crowded. The shared restrooms were very clean, the water pressure was ok. Enough parking lots. Wi-Fi working very well.

Others: perfect place to stay if you are coming from / going to Jökulsárlón or Diamond Beach. Hali is the closest place to stay if you are planning to go to those places.
This place offers you (included in the price) Skyr’s, the popular Icelandic yogurt, so if you hasn’t try it, this could be your chance – Not sure if the name of the hostel is related to the yogurt in some way.

We only stayed at the Skyrhusid Guest House for 1 night on 21 March 2019 but I loved it and would absolutely stay again if I ever return to Iceland. Firstly, the location is excellent. It is very close to the Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach and is recommend a visit to both at sunset as it is truly stunning. We arrived quite late (around 8pm) to the guesthouse but a key was waiting for us with our name and check in was simple and stress free. Our little twin room was very clean and had a little sink/Mirror and plenty of plugs. Although the bathrooms are shared, there was enough so we never had to wait and they were clean and had great amenities with extra towels etc. The communal kitchen was wonderful with all facilities including use of a kettle, microwave and hob. Tea and coffee was free and free cake is left for guests to help themselves (we had some gorgeous banana cake!). There is some seating here too which is very comfortable and the entire place felt personal, homely and welcoming. It was very comfortable and relaxed we felt immediately at home. The views from the guesthouse were absolutely spectacular. To the rear were snow covered mountains and to the front (our view) was the sea! For the price, we couldn’t fault our stay here. The owner even greeted us as we left as she realised she hadn’t introduced herself when we arrived late. I’d recommend this beautiful little guesthouse to anyone - thank you for a special little stay :)

Convenient to Diamond Beach. Just a couple of restaurants near by. Because it was around Christmas we only got Christmas buffets which got a little spendy. They do offer all the skyr (yogurt) you want. We had it for breakfast. We had an upstairs room which didn't have its own bathroom--there were two down the hall. We also had to take our boots off in the hall to keep the rooms cleaner.

We stayed here just one night after competing an afternoon glacier ice cave visit in Jokulsarlon. The hostess is kind and the place was very clean. The shared bathrooms posed no problems at all due to the way they are at set up and we had privacy. The cottage offers a little kitchen where you can make your own meal, a fact that I didn't know. We looked at dinner options in the museum restaurant and it was atrociously over priced, even for Iceland. Definitely consider making use of the kitchen as there are not many options for food in this area. They give you free tea, coffee, milk and yoghurt. There are small cereal boxes and instant noodles for purchase. There is also a tiny dining area and they put out a toaster in the morning. Staying here was a bonus as we could drive to the lagoon and diamond beach at sunrise, and it was magical to have the place to ourselves.

Establishment with impeccable cleanliness and with spacious rooms. The view is exceptional. On one side we see the sea and on the other side the mountains. Although lunch is not included, the property offers some items for free (tea, coffee, Skyr, cupcakes). The bathrooms are shared but it is well built so that you are private when taking a shower. The common living room and kitchen is very small. We ate in our room and if a family is there it is difficult to share the place.

Room tip: Second floor has 2 shared private bathrooms
