We recently spent 3 nights in the Helka hotel whilst visiting Helsinki. We had taken a ferry crossing from Tallinn so arrived at the Nordic Jet terminal at the market front. We had a decent map and plenty of time so walked to hotel which took about 20mins.The hotel proved to be very well situated. 5mins from Kamppi shopping mall and bus station, a little further to Forum shopping centre, Contemporary Art gallery and railway station. 10 mins walk to Finish museum, Finlandia concert hall and a further 10 mins to the opera hall.Other main attractions were all within 20 mins walk.
The hotel itself had eveything we needed.Clean reasonable sized rooms, excellent and plentiful breakfast and a friendly helpful staff.
As we arrived on a Sunday finding a place for evening meal was not so easy and we eventually made do with a snack bought from nearby supermarket. However the following evening as it was so wet outside we decided to eat in the hotel restaurant. This proved an excellent choice with a set priced menu for 30 euros each for 3 courses and very good standard of cuisine.
On our third night we looked for somewhere close to the opera hall where we were going to see Cosi fan Tutti. We chose a Hungarian restaurant which we do not overly recommend.I am sure Helsinki has many good eating places but we were just a bit unfortunate in not finding them!
As many museums are shut on a Monday we decided to take a bus outwith the city to see some rural Finland and a smaller town. We asked advice at the bus station and ended up in Jarven-paa about 1 hour away. This cost 12 euros per round trip and we felt it worth doing. We spent an afternoon exploring the town until the rain again drove us back to Helsinki. The following day we visited the Contemporary Art gallery which was excellent and the Finish museum which was also very interesting.
Considering how centrally this hotel is situated I believe it rated as excellent value in a fairly costly city.
