If you are staying here for the northern lights, i would suggest taking the ground floor units for easier access to the river for viewing and running back to the room for hot drinks.

Kultahovi is an average hotel next to river Juutuanjoki at Inari center. Maybe the best in Inari, better ones are in Ivalo. Aging is visible and soundproofing lousy.

Room Tip: Rooms closer to river are newer and have a sauna with them.

Hotel Kultahovi is a delightful family-run hotel on the banks of the river that runs into Lake Inari. We stayed in a 'superior' room of which there are 16 in the separate river block a few metres from the old hotel building. The rooms are modern and very clean. Those on the upper floor of the river block have the better views towards the river. All the river block rooms have their own sauna which we used used daily and we a great way of relaxing before evening meal. Rooms are compact but very comfortable. There is excellent wired broadband in the river block rooms (take a Cat 5 cable with you).

We took a package which included evening meals. For Finland, the additional cost, per person, for the 3 course evening meal was very reasonable. We stayed at the Kultahovi for 5 nights and never had a disappointing course in all that time. The cooking is modern, contemporary, well seasoned and makes great use of local ingredients such as reindeer, freshwater fish from the lake, cloudberry and mushrooms. Each course was both beautifully presented and delicious. The chef is clearly talented. Also, as another reviewer commented, they hotel prices for drinks are not as expensive as I expected. One review criticised the breakfasts - something I cannot agree with. There is an excellent selection including freshly baked breads, croissants, porridge, yoghurt, cereal, muesli, fresh fruit, dried fruit, ham, salami, several cheeses, eggs, pickled herring, tomatoes, etc.

In March I think many of the hotel guests are tourists either there for the cross-country skiing and/or for spotting the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. The hotel is next to a river that is frozen in March - the riverbank provides a great natural viewing point for the aurora (see the attached photos) with the added advantage of being able to nip back to your room from time to time to warm up/get a hot drink, etc. In the 5 nights we were there we were fortunate enough to witness the aurora on 3 nights, the other 2 were cloudy.

Hotel Kultahovi also benefits from being a few steps from the recently opened Sami cultural centre and a 10 minute walk from Siida the excellent Sami museum. The walk to the so-called Wilderness church is also recommended.

My wife and I stayed here one night in early march 2012. Overall, we quite liked it. It's quite a plain, simple place, but nicely done and very clean. Our room had two single beds pushed together, a small desk, a comfy chair, balcony, and tea making spot. There was a small flat screen tv mounted on the wall; it was possible to get to the inputs (rsa, hdmi etc). There were no other mod cons such as room safe, ironing board, hair dryer or fridge. It was possible to adjust the temperature. I couldn't get wifi in the room, but there was good, open wifi in the main restaurant building.

There was a nice bathroom too, with a little sauna built in.

We ate in the restaurant that evening. My wife had chorizo and reindeer pasta, which she liked; i had sauteed reindeer with mash and lingonberry jam (a Finnish classic), which didn't look special, but was tasty and filling. We shared apple pie for dessert, which was also good. The breakfast buffet the next day was fine- cereals, eggs, porridge, pickled fish etc.

We stayed for two nights in a traditional room. Not fancy, in fact very ordinary, but clean and comfortable.

The restaurant, for breakfasts and dinners, is of exceptionally high quality. That, as well as the ever helpful Andre, really made our stay a joy. We were there in the cold of winter, with Lake Inari and the best salmon river in Europe frozen over. I would love to return in summer for the contrast.
