“Avalon, great hotel”
Reviewed 29 July 2012

Stayed at the Avalon for 3 nights in July 2012. Staff was incredibly helpful, breakfasts were great, and the location is perfect for seeing all of Gothenburg. Room and toilet were very up-to-date with good amenities. No central business PC, but the staff were happy to allow use of the lobby PC. Only drawback to our stay was the lack of air conditioning. Gothenburg was warm and rainy w/ high humidity during our stay. Windows did open which is a plus, but the street noise was loud enough to impact a good nights sleep. The hotel did provide a fan which did help, but the windows had to be kept open to keep the room comfortable. In spite of all this, I would return.

J Diedrich

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the courtyard on the 5th floor.

I stayed for two nights in one of First Hotel Avalon's open bath rooms. Right off the bat, I have to say the room layout is cool: very unique but still functional. Not only can you lie in the tub and watch TV, you can even see the TV from the toilet (if you leave the door open) or via the mirror at the sink when brushing you teeth! The room as well as the rest of the hotel are absolutely beautiful, with quality materials throughout.

The rooftop pool, which partly hangs over the edge of the building is also worth a visit, as you can see down through the glass floor. It's not big enough for swimming though, and oddly only open from noon until 6 pm.

There is, however, a lot the hotel could do to go from great to excellent: Get a bigger TV with a digital signal; install a shower curtain so you don't splash down the toilet area; install a fitted tissue box instead of the flimsy paper one on the sink; make sure all lamps work; install lights in the closet; and skip the pseudo-science that is feng shui. One thing they probably can't fix is the pub noise from across the street.

All in all, First Hotel Avalon is a stunning design hotel, and you will probably not find anything better in Gothenburg.

Room Tip: Pick a high floor to get away from the noise from the many restaurants in the area.

I was staying for two days with my family in Avalon Hotel, right in the center of Gothenburg. We met some of the most friendly and service minded staff we ever met in any hotel around the globe. We had booked a parking lot in the garage, and staff informed us to leave the car in the street outside and they will take care of driving the car to the garage. We really had the feeling of being welcome to this hotel. They also informed us there was a swimming pool at floor seven (roof), if we wanted to swim and take a bath. The room was of normally european size, and we could really see all the design details everywhere in this hotel. Nice, clean, friendly everywhere you looked. We got up to the pool and found a small but really cool pool with a glass wall and about a metre of glass floor so you could look out and see the center of Gothenburg, through the pool wall. Exiting experience! Breakfast was really good, with a lot of choices so everybody get what they wanted in the family. Avalon Hotel, we are coming back next year! Thanks for a really nice and unforgettable stay in your hotel!

This hotel is in a great location and across the road from the airport bus stop. Check in staff friendly but we were initially disappointed to realise that we'd been allocated a room below the level we'd booked - we were given a twin standard room with an internal door (hate these as there is no sound proofing!) but had booked a superior room (and wanted a double). This was fixed after returning to reception. The room, quality of bed linen/pillows/towels, the design and amenities were excellent. Note that there is no air conditioning. Breakfast was chaotic but good (other guests were pushy and rude and finding a table was a free for all!). The swimming pool on the roof is tiny but looks amazing from the street.

Room Tip: We had a superior level room which was much nicer than the standard. Next time I'd opt for an in...

Really like this hotel - modern, convenient and excellent staff.

The rooms are small (European) - even the deluxe rooms, however, the design is excellent. An entire wall of windows makes up for the size - light comes streaming in - day and night in June. They have blackout curtains which is great.

Lots of modern art books in the room on design etc. Good closet space with a safe. The safe has an electrical outlet inside - GREAT idea - you can charge your i-phone or b-berry without leaving it unattended when out of the room.

The bathroom was Super-Modern. Big separate tub, modern double sink and combined toilet and shower room - interesting space saving idea. The shower was great - I hung my pants over the toilet area to steam the creases out while taking a shower.

Front Desk: Efficient check in and check out.

Breakfast: Included in room charge - good selection and service.

Location: Perfect

Unique: Roof top pool overhangs the front of the hotel... get in shape!
