City Museum (Goteborgs Stadsmuseum)
Reviewed 16 August 2017

The city museum is a bit boring to be honest. Some confusing information, especially when it comes to earlier history. Facts, legends and myths were mixed without having a clear enough distinction. The modern history was just not that interesting due to the average setup. Could be more catchy if organised better.

Exhibition on Swedish music was fun, and old Viking ship interesting. Small play area for under 4s helpful for a quick run around as well.

We did not allow enough time to see everything in this musuem [you will need at least 2 - 21/2 hrs] but what we enjoyed it all the same. Fantastic historical treasures from as far back as the 12th century. There are ipad displays for most sections and you can select eack item on display and learn more about its history or go into greater detail on the close-ups. There was a modern section too but I found the historical section more interesting and there was a lot of interactive parts too. The kids enjoyed wearing the costumes and posing in front of historical scenes. The religious artifacts were also amazing and some were all that remained after a great fire had swept through parts of this ~400 yr old city. An educational treat to see and enjoy!

There are several temporary exhibits on a variety of themes as well as the permanent exhibits. In preparation for the 400th anniversary of Gothenburg in 2021, they recently opened an exhibit on the birth of Gothenburg. This exhibit is kid-friendly and very informative.

The museum is free for students and young people and is magnificently structured, although many items are of no real historical value. But the designers and the historians who created the museum did a great job. A little hipster perhaps.
