“Charming, cozy and right in the city centre”
Reviewed 2 September 2011

This tiny hotel is right in the most central part of Stockholm, walking distance from public transport and on a pedestrian street dense with shops and bars/restaurants.
The rooms are small but very cozy, the place resembles an old ship and is well looked after. Good continental breakfast. Good reception desk service.

Just like on a real ship, the rooms in this nautical-themed hotel are small. So what. Don't stay in the room when you're in Stockholm! Staff was very friendly. Breakfast was just OK. Best benefit is location. Less than two blocks from the palace and about five from the metro.

Those of us who stay in a range of different hotels in different countries would probably struggle to remember details of them a few months down the line. I’m certain that one hotel everybody will remember will be this one – and in my case it will be for all the right reasons.

Those that stay there with an up-front idea of the size of the hotel will be pleasantly surprised. The key is the location – in what is possibly the busiest street in the city for the tourist trade. As well as all the attractions of Gamla Stan on your doorstep you are just a short walk from Slussen for the Djurgarden ferry, to the royal palace, or the highly efficient local “blue bus” – numbers 2 or 3.

I can imagine those from North America would find the rooms small – but unless you are claustrophobic you’ll find them to be “something different to the norm”. They still have a TV, decent sized shower and windows that open. I was in Stockholm in August during four or five days of unbroken sun, yet didn’t have an issue with the room getting too warm, as it is well shaded.

Breakfast can get a bit cramped at the weekend when it doesn’t start until 8am, but otherwise it is well managed with plenty on offer. The nautical theme was quirky but interesting, as was the information about the hotel, including the fact that at 6 metres wide it is the narrowest hotel in the City.

One of the highlights of the hotel, apart from the unique location, is the “poop deck”, where you can go up a few steps and onto the roof of the hotel, where there are tables and chairs to sit and admire the rooftops of the Swedish capital. On a calm evening you may see the regular hot-air balloon flights go past – on one evening they flew either side of the hotel, low enough so you could hear the burners being used.

The free wifi worked really well for me (on the third floor), with no issues of connectivity.
The staff at the hotel are exceptionally helpful too, and with a bargain rate on offer (accepting Stockholm is an expensive city for hotels), then all-in-all it was a most memorable experience.

A small hotell in the centre of Stokholms "Gamla Stan", the Old City. The central location is the only thing this hotel has going for it, besides that the rooms more resemble stuffy cabins and the extremly hard beds are mere bunks, not recomended for anybody over normal hight. Maybe OK as a cheap and central B&B, definitly not OK as a 150 + USD hotell.

I think you either love or hate the Lord Nelson hotel. I found it charming, but the rooms are incredibly small - even for Stockholm standards. Mine didn't even fit a bedside table and it took me a few minutes to find the wardrobe. The bathroom was basic and so was breakfast. My window looked into some girl's kitchen, which was about 3 m away.

However, the location is unbeatable, particularly for sightseeing, the staff were friendly, and if you're into "charming", this is it. The whole place is packed with ship periphernalia, so if that's your thing, this place will be like heaven.

It was a nice stay, but I think I'm going to stay somewhere else next time.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Lord Nelson Hotel is an intimate, friendly and pleasant hotel right in the heart of Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town. You find the hotel on the main street, close to the city centre and all the capital’s sights and attractions. But the hotel itself is also an attraction, as it contains a unique, private collection of maritime antiques – passionately gathered through the decades by the owner family Bengtsson. All rooms have been designed and decorated to resemble cabins on a ship. The building dates from the 17th century and at just under six metres wide, this property is undoubtedly Sweden’s narrowest hotel. In the Summer time the hotel guests can enjoy a Beautiful view on Poop Deck, the roof top terrace. The Continental Breakfast has an organic a fairtrade profile, and the hotel offers free coffe and tea service in the library on the first floor. ... more   less
