“Roses, Swans and Sail boats”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2012

Rooms that are large and airy and minimalist almost to the point of annoying (oh come on how about a designer bench of some sort for suitcases) soon merge into the background when the real pleasures of this very original hotel become apparent. Windows look out across green lawns, beds of fragrant roses, and riots of wildflowers to the lake that forms the centre of Stockholm. I was there in mid summer, so flinging open the windows in the morning brought in the intense scent of the flowers and the blue sparkle of the water with its swans and sail boats.

A short walk around the water’s edge and you are right across from the Royal Palace and the Old Town. They are reached across a pretty bridge.

On a sunny morning breakfast on the terrace with bird accompaniment can be unforgettable. Nice large Finnish Arabia coffee cups too.

Just behind the hotel are the Museums of Modern Art and Architecture and some jolly rotating French sculptures, and across on the island of Djugarden is the fabulous recovered sunken warship the Vasa.

Also the white sailing vessel that is a youth hostel does a great on-deck lunch.

You just have to keep reminding yourself that you are at the very centre of a large sophisticated city.

Oh and the beds are very comfortable too.

Room Tip: Rooms farthest from reception are quieter although there is a minor hike to breakfast

We loved the tranquil location, and the dinner was delicious, but I think I'd choose a different hotel if I returned to Stockholm. Here's why:
I don't mind modern design, as long as it's functional. This room lacked a place to put luggage other than the floor, had a hard to access and small closet, and not enough places to hang up wet coats- and it does rain here! Although the bathroom really looked beautiful and stylish, it was impractical. The rain shower sprayed water all over the bathroom once we finally deciphered how to turn it on.There is no place to hang clothes in the bathroom- probably a good thing since everywhere got soaking wet when the shower was on. The sink is fun to play with, but not practical. Don't expect to be able to rinse out undies here, do expect to get your shirt wet as the water splashes off the rock. And I hope you don't need privacy, because the wall between the shower and the room is green glass. I hoped the wooden shutters would block the midnight sun, but no such luck. Bring eye shades.
The bed was comfortable, however in a standard room the bed is smaller than an American queen.
Breakfast was tasty, but the buffet was disorganized. You had to zigzag around the room to gather up what you wanted: glasses were at one end, juices at the other, hard boiled eggs were nowhere near the egg spoons. The bread was very good...but watching people handle it with their hands while cutting off slices made me lose my appetite. Staff should put a clean cloth over the loaf before allowing people to start cutting slices. Fruit salad was available one day, but not on the next two days.
There were no comfortable places to sit- either common areas, or chairs in the room.
Getting into town on bus 65 was easy, but somehow we always missed the returning bus. The 15 minute walk isn't bad if the weather is good, but it's a long cold walk in the rain.
For the price, I expected a better designed and run hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the garden are quieter, choose a larger room if you want a truly double room- otherwise...

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write this review.
Glad to hear you enjoyed our stunning location and our restaurant.
Sorry to hear you will not choose us if you will return to Stockholm.
The hotel are in historical buildings from 1699 and they are listed by the Government and they are also on the Swedish Governments 100 list, the Government list the best 100 buildings in Sweden from a historical point of view and we are very proud to be on that list together with the Royal Palace in Stockholm among others.
I can agree that there are some parts in the rooms that not is the most practical, for example the closet, due to the historical aspects we were not allowed to build a normal closet and put it on a wall so our interior designers Claesson Koivisto Rune designed this very stylish Scandinavian free stand closet. We know we are not the most practical hotel but we hope that our amazing history, Scandinavian interior design, bathroom amenities from Swedish Byredo, our amazing garden where our guests can have breakfast, lunch, dinner to that we are very proud to be a green/ eco labeled hotel make up for this.
I am sorry you felt our felt our breakfast was unorganized, I will certainly look in to that and see what improvements we can do. We normally have a cloth on our bread and of course there should of be fruit salad every day.

I hope you had a nice time in our capital and that you will return to Stockholm in the future.

Best from a sunny Stockholm,
Joachim Olausson

Most reviews here seem to support my impression that this is a modern yet calm and characteristic oasis in a very central yet scenic location in Stockholm. You do feel like you are on holiday, already walking across the bridge from the city centre and along the water to the hotel's outdoor area.
Rooms are modern, clean and stylish, beds comfortable and shower strong.
The breakfast is one of the best I ever had in a hotel. Many items seem home-made, the bread and salmon being particularly delicious.
The hotel does a good job at concealing that it houses a lot of guests and is quite popular with European and American guests.
The only flaw: We booked a twin room in a certain (standard) category, only to be told on arrival that the hotel has no twin rooms in this category and that for the first night we would be put up in one kingsize bed (180cm) and then next day we'd have to see.
So far, so good - next day we were told by the reception staff there were no kingsize beds or twin rooms left, but we could get a queensize (140cm) and share that, or get two queensize and pay the second room extra. Or put a spare bed in the queensize bed room, but no, "actually, that would make the room too crowded." Two 6'4" males sharing a 140cm bed? Thanks. We were a bit stunned and overwhelmed to protest and probably in too good a mood (thanks to lovely Stockholm and the breakfast just had) and too lazy to kick up a fuss, so accepted to share, but in hindsight this really was a disappointment. Staff could have done much better to sort us out as it wasn't our fault that they sold us a twin room when there was none in the first place.
Would still always go back to this place, but make sure you get your beds/rooms confirmed in advance!

Room Tip: if you need a twin room, make sure you confirm it before arrival bay view rooms are probably loveli...

Dear Guest,
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this review!
So glad to read you enjoyed our oasis in the city centre and I can only agree we are very lucky to be on this green island with a garden and water in front of the hotel.
We get nice reviews for our complimentary breakfast so I am happy you enjoyed it.
I am sorry for the inconvenience regarding the twin room. Our room categories standard and superior rooms only come with one bed per room and not a twin and on our website and other booking engines we use it should be clear that it only comes with one bed but I will look in to it so it will be extra clear for the future and if you booked your room on the phone with us we failed to inform you. Our superior XL and Deluxe rooms come with either a big bed or twin bed. I am sorry you felt like my team at the Front Desk didn’t handle it in a good way. Be assure I will talk to them about this.
I am glad you still would like to come back to us when you will return to Stockholm and then I hope I will have the pleasure to personally handle your reservation and you can mail me on:

We're really enjoying our stay here (night 4 of 7). This is Scandanavian chic at its best. Apart from the contemporary sensibility of this hipsterish hotel, it's rich in history (housed in a 17th cent naval barracks). We are loving the food, the breakfast being one of the best we've had ever! After staying in two places in Europe so far with no free wi-Fi, we have enjoyed this feature at HS.

Our one critique is that the wait staff attention and attitude has been varied. We keep hoping we get one blonde girl to wait on us for dinner (we've eaten here three times after long days in town). The other female waitstaff have been cranky and inattentive. If only they knew how badly this reflects on this lovely place.

Dear Guest,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this review!
Glad to read you enjoyed your stay with us. Our Scandinavian interior is a nice contrast to these historical buildings from 1699. Glad to hear you enjoyed our complimentary breakfast and wireless internet.
Sorry to hear you felt that that one of the waitress was cranky, we have a very high service ambition and there is no excuse to be cranky, be assure I will speak to my team about this.

I hope we will have the pleasure to welcome you back to our capital soon again.

Quiet, lovely. Decor spare yet elegant, food delicious. Easy access to Gamla Stan by bus. Staff are casually attentive, not intrusive. We will definitely be back.
