“Friendly, clean and well-located”
Reviewed 12 March 2012

We (3 girls) arrived in evening and were a bit worried walking around the central station area after reading some of the general area reviews, but it was absolutely fine (it's a central station, so you get whatever you get around almost every central station). Location was great for wlaking into the city. Staff was really welcoming and friendly. Very nice and clean room- We had a triple room which was a decent size for the prize. Only minus was the size of bathroom, which fitted one person + no threshold between shower and bathroom floor meant water covering most of the floor. Breakfast in the morning was a nice collection of breads and cereal etc and option for taking a packet lunch was available (although we went to one of the chinese places around the corner for our last lunch, which was great).

Great hotel to explore the city for a weekend.

When we arrived at the Ansgar we noticed there was scaffolding up all over the outside of the building. We checked in and everything was OK. Room was very basic and bathroom a bit smelly (drain smell) but fine for the price. Had a restless night due to our room being next to the stairwell and rooms badly insulated/walls paper thin. Could hear people climbing up and down the stairs all night. We were woken at 7.30 the next morning to banging below, looked out of the window and saw it was due to windows being replaced on the lower floors of the hotel (hence the scaffolding). Went down for breakfast which was good for the price and located in a nice breakfast room off reception. We went out for the day and when we returned we noticed the scaffolding was now built up directly outside the window of our room. Had a bit of a bad feeling about it but thought surely they would not be working outside our room without mention from the staff? I was wrong..... We were woken again at 7/7.30 to the LOUDEST banging and drilling right outside our window (on the 3rd floor) My partner went down to reception to ask what was going on and was told 'its a difficult situation' However they did offer to move us to another room at the back of the hotel where it was quieter. After relocating we went down to breakfast passing our previous room on the way where they were replacing the window. I have a feeling if we had stayed they would have taken the window out with us and our belongings still in there. Although the staff on reception went some way to fix the problem by relocated us it was a bit too little too late as it was our last evening by then. What i don't understand is why there was not mention of this when booking, inbetween booking and arriving or even whilst checking in?. A simple 'we are having building work done, please accept our apologies' would have gone some way to make us feel better but there was nothing. It felt a bit like they were pretending it wasnt happening and were hoping no one would notice or complain!! I understand that the hotel is in need on a facelift and the would lose money if it were to close whilst refurbishing but surely it would be better if not to avoid placing people in the rooms undergoing work then perhaps to offer some money off the bill as way of an apology (as has happened at previous places i have stayed) or at the very least a 'sorry about the inconvenience'. Not a great experience overall.

The Ansgar is located in a side street close to the central train station and so its location is quite convenient although the surrounding environment is far from appealing. The hotel has no restaurant but there is a reasonable selection, primarily Chinese or Vietnamese within about a ten minute walk. The corridors are dowdy and dimly lit with carpeting in need of replacement. The rooms themselves are reasonably furnished and relatively comfortable but with minimal sound insulation from the corridors the rooms are frequently noisy - in my case until 1.30 am. The staff are friendly and helpful. The lift inconveniently goes to levels half way between floors so faced with either having to ascend or decend a few stairs to get to one's floor can be a problem when carrying suitcases. Breakfasts are served in a room off Reception and comprise typical continental breads and cold cuts.
I am afraid I will be spending aa few pounds more and staying elsewhere in future.

Ansgar has a very good location and the neighborhood is not as shady as some claim. The rooms are rather small, somewhat standard, but clean. Beware that the walls are thin as paper, so hope for not-so-noisy-neighbors. Ansgar is a good choice if you want to have decent accommodation close to the cemter but don't want to pay too much.

My boyfriend and I booked into this hotel after a disastrous stay at the Danhostel CPH Downtown. Upon arrival on the ultra-rainy afternoon, the desk staff courteously welcomed us despite our resemblance to drowned rats. A mix-up with the booking was handled with professionalism and a sense of humor, which we appreciated. The next morning, the staff also helped us print our boarding passes and later I saw the woman at the desk patiently explaining to other guests different attractions around town - all signs of the good service we experienced.

Our room was small, yes, but the amenities were just fine. The double bed was comfortable and the shower was nice and clean. The only (small) complaint I had was that the shower area is simply ringed off by the curtain and as the water didn't drain quickly, it was easy to flood the whole bathroom. Long showers not advised.

Other great aspects include free wi-fi throughout the hotel and the breakfast buffet (included in the price). There was a wide array of meats, cheese, breads, vegetables, yogurt, museli, fruit, etc. that kept us full well into the afternoon.

All in all, Hotel Ansgar was just wanted we needed to round out our Copenhagen trip. Highly recommended.
