When you want visit historical city you have to passed these walls. Venetians awared need to defend their city against the Turks built them around all the city. It held the Turk invasion for unexpectedly long time. Lot of strong walls, gates, bastions... on the walls are tombs of cretan (and greece as well) important personalities as were Eleftherios Venizelos and Nikos Kazantzakis. Also Liberty square remembering resistence during world war II. Beautifully preserved, my hats down.
