I only walked a short way along the walls, but I was very impressed by the magnificent condition of the walls.

This is a viewpoint on the Akrotiri peninsular. Also here is the gravestone and memorial to the writer Nikos Kazantzakis. The nearby Venetian walls and little church are worth a look.

Just beyond the city centre are the impressive Venetian walls. Great views but some paths to access them are overgrown and from the smell used as public toilets. If you cans a clear way up they are worth visiting.

If you like the work of Nikos Kazantzakis you should come here. It's simple, but that's what it makes so appropriate.

When in Crete a visit to Heraklion is nice. The Venetian Walls and fortress are nice to
visit, but the musea (archeological, historical and that of Kazantzakis) are in my view more interesting.
Worth while to see.

you can't see the whole place if you don't walk it - prefer a late afternoon time to visit and explore the whole place.

We recommend walking the whole length of the Venetian walls. It's about 2 1/2 miles so choose a cooler time of day, take lots of water and wear sensible shoes as the path is very gravelly. The tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis is a lovely spot along the way but mostly we found ourselves alone on the walls and certainly no crowds.

Walls are a really nice walk around the city and you get great views across the old part of the city from the top. Great photo ops.
The tomb itself is lovely, its very secluded with benches for a rest stop.
Sadly there's no real signs about who Kazantzakis was so we had to google him after the fact.
I feel you need some degree of fitness to walk around as there are many steps, uneven ground and slopes.

Kazantzakis is a famous modern local writer. His books are translated in many languages. I happened to read one of them. If you know who he is you will pay a visit...
