An amazing hotel. The only 2 things it would do different, was that you have to pat for wifi in the rooms, and it is a 10 min. walk from all the restaurants and shops.
But an amazing hotel, very nice, and large rooms, and the pool is amazing, but come early if you want a lounge chair by the pool as they are very popular.

After reading the reviews from some of the people that have previously booked the Melia Athens, I assumed the area would be like downtown Beirut or maybe the Bronx. Nothing could be further than the truth. Trust me; if this area worries you, you shouldn’t ever walk out of your front door. I walked to the Hotel from the Metro at 11.30 pm and the walk took me five minutes through very busy, very well lit streets. Yes, sure, the area is a bit down at heel but so is the rest of Athens. The city centre is lovely but as you radiate away, there is evidence of closed shops and graffiti. The city is a pretty picture in a dirty frame. However, there is absolutely no sense of threat and I’d be much more worried walking through central London at night.
As for the hotel, what at amazing gem. It was refurbished at huge expense for the Olympics and it screams luxury at every turn. The rooms are good sizes, beautifully furnished and they have well-appointed marble clad bathrooms with a power showers and Jacuzzi. The corridors are tastefully wood panelled and the restaurants are very attractive and comfortable. However, the piece de resistance is the stunning rooftop pool and bar that has fabulous views of the Parthenon sitting atop the Acropolis. It’s an amazing thing to see when lit up at night, especially when you are lazing on a lounger and peering at it over the brim of a cocktail glass!!!
I genuinely wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Melia Athens to anyone. It’s a top class hotel at a budget price. I paid seventy Euros a night for a twin room and unbelievably, I was given a thirty Euros daily credit to spend in the hotel restaurant (or on room service). What an absolute bargain!!!!

Hotel was clean, modern and helpful staff. Room was small but had a sweet washroom and overall was very comfortable. Good restaurant with free wifi. There are lots of cafes, stores, restaurants in the area during the day. 15-20 minute walk to decent tourist areas. Staff was helpful but I wouldn't say they went above and beyond my expectations. Roof top bar was closed late April, so I cannot comment on it. Great breakfest with the best fruit I have ever had.

I read reviews on the area so I knew it wasn't the greatest. As a young adult, I look for nightlife and it didn't exist in the area. During the day, the area is fine, a little sketchy but not concerning. At night shady characters can be seen walking about like drug induced zombies but they are not threating just smelly, ugly, loud. I never felt in danger, but I scary looking dude myself. I would honestly recommend a hotel in a different area is the price was simaliar, not due to the shadyness, moreso the hassle of walking 20 minutes to get to some decent tourism.

PS-There is a lot of police presence in the area at night, it feels safe just not pleasing to the eye.

Room Tip: Regular rooms are fine, views from my room was horrid. Ask for a room facing the street not the alle...

Dear Fil S

Thank you for choosing Meliá Athens for your recent stay in April 2012 in Athens.

It is important to know that your general comments about our services and our staff are positive. We are concerned that you feel that our staff didn’t exceed your expectations as this doesn’t fit with the Meliá Experience that we wish to offer to our guests. Your valuable comments are already shared with our colleagues in order to assure that our standards and culture will be followed at all times.

With regards to your comments about the area that Meliá Athens is located, kindly note that it is a very interesting shopping area in walking distance of the most central metro stations of Athens, attracting many locals and international travellers. As in all major cities, there are areas that precautions are suggested, but we reassure you that it is a safe one, generally safer of comparably sized metropolitan cities. Additional to this, kindly note that the municipality of Athens has very recently carried out a program of reallocating all street sellers thus making the area much friendlier.

We would be more than pleased to have the chance to welcome you again in our hotel in the nearest future.

Best Regards,

Yannis Homenidis – General Manager at Meliá Athens

The Melia Athens is a good solid hotel - nothing exiting but also nothing wrong. Perhaps the really exciting part of it the roof top terrace and pool was closed for maintenance - which is a good thing, that it is well maintained, I was just too unfortunate to stay right then. The location is good, within walking distance to the metro. The Level room showed a bit of wear and tear, but was still o.k. The only downside was breakfast: Although the hotel wasn't sold out, they struggled to accomodate all the guest and to refill the buffet.
