“Nice Hotel, excellent location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 June 2012

We have stayed at the Astor hotel on numerous occasions during the last 9 years since we discovered it. I agree with some reviewers that the decor is dated and the rooms need updating. But there are any things that they offer that are not easy to find in Greece: Friendly, helpful front desk staff who seem genuinely eager and happy to help you (not easy to find in Greece, trust me); an excellent full breakfast buffet (again, this is a hit and miss in many hotels in Greece) with an amazing view of the acropolis; an unbeatable location with easy access from the airport; close proximity to the best shopping and the best monuments/museums. There are other hotels in the plaka and monastiraki districts that may be better, But this is the only one we have found so far that offers all the features/benefits described above. We have been to this hotel three times. Each time we left happy. This last time we even had a view of the acropolis, we were allowed to check in early (because of a flight change we arrived in Athens 3 hours earlier than planned), and were offered free breakfast on the day of our arrival. Great service. Thanks you Astor Hotel.

We have stayed at The Astor on every trip to Greece in the last 5 years - it's a basic hotel near Syntagma and that's about as much that can be said for it.

Our last stay left a bad taste in our mouths, so we won't be returning. We booked 6 months in advance via email, specifically requesting a deluxe room with direct views to the Acropolis.

When we checked in, there was initially no booking for us - until I showed the Manager our email correspondence. The best he could offer us was the disabled room. The bathroom made for some interesting moments!

This hotel is a good option for a cheap and cheerful stop over in Athens.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with direct views to the Acropolis. And make sure breakfast and airconditioning is in...

We stayed a total of 5 nights in Athens. Hotel Astor staff was the best. We had rooms on the 7th and 8th floor with best nighttime view of the Parthenon. Located in the center of Athens, Parliament changing of the guards and many local restaurant bars for a quick bit to eat. Ask for Nickolas.- Greg

Room Tip: get a 7th-8th floor for viewing

Stayed for 2 nights upon our arrival in Athens. We had a standard hotel room. The bathroom had been remodeled and was lovely, except that the faucet leaked. What makes this hotel a winner is the great location only about 1/2 block from the Plaka and about 1 block from Syntagma Square, which made it very easy to walk to a lot of sites (including the Changing of the Guard at the Parliament Building, the Ancient Agora, all through the Plaka). And the view of the Acropolis is amazing! There is a rooftop restaurant and deck -- enjoy the view of the Acropolis and Athens while having your breakfast, sit on the deck and watch the sunset and the lights come on all over Athens and The Parthenon. After our island and land tour of Greece, we returned to the Astor Hotel for our last night prior to our flight home -- our room had a view of the Acropolis so we could enjoy it to the very end as we were packing up. Again because of the close proximity of the Hotel to the Plaka, we walked down to Monastiraki Square for dinner, along pedestrian Ermou Street. This hotel offers a perfect location and incredible views.

We could lie in bed and look at the floodlit Parthenon, a view to remember. This hotel suited all our needs: clean rooms, helpful pleasant staff, centrally placed within easy reach of the main places to visit and an excellent resonably priced Taverna within 5 minutes walk. The breakfast was ideal for my gluten-free husband as there were cornflakes and fried potatoes and that wonderful Greek yogurt with fruit or honey. There was also a fridge in the room.

There is also a secure luggage room where we left a suitcase when we went off to Spetses where all luggage has to be carried or put on an expensive threewheeler.

The hotel could do with a bit of a refurb in places but this was not a problem for us as everything worked and shampoos etc were replaced daily.

Room Tip: ,Ask for a room which looks out on to the Acropolis. We did not use the A/C so cannot comment on it...
