A messenger had to run from the city of Marathon to central Athens carrying news of the war. He ran the 26.2 miles, finishing right here. And so the marathon was born. Visiting this place, you can channel your inner Olympian at the birthplace of the modern games, and even do your own 400 meter sprint.

Very nice stop

Although you can see into the stadium from the sidewalk - definitely pay to go in.

Also, definitely use the audio guide tour (it is free!)

On our Athens City tour (G.O. Tours) we were disappointed that we were only able to stand outside.
When we were here 20 years ago we were able to get into the stands. It appears that now you have to pay extra to get into the stands.
Possibly a money grab but the tour directors need to catch up and include entry with their city tour prices. No sense stopping and getting off the bus if you do not go in.

It was originally built in 6th century BC as a racecourse. Under the Romans, it further got expanded and in 1896, it was a site of modern Olympic Games held in Athens. History with continuity, indeed. Furthermore, it also has the credit of being the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble. So, do plan to visit this historical gem in Athens.
