“Truly Grand”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 June 2012

The setting is sublime, rooms are luxuriously comfortable, the pool area on the roof is great, but the best dimension of the Grande Bretagne is the restaurant on the roof. It ranks for me as one of the most stellar settings in the world. The hotel's service was excellent.

Room Tip: Ask for an Acropolis view with a balcony.

This hotel is in a fantastic position to sightsee Athens, many of which are within easy walking distance from the hotel. The room I was allocated was on the second floor, which was too low down to see the Acropolis but did have a good balcony and view of the square. The room was of a decent size and was very well maintained retaining its original classical charm. We ate dinner an breakfast in the hotel's roof top restaurant which has unsurpassed views of the acropolis. None of the photos do this experience justice.

The only areas for improvement with this hotel are with the roof top restaurant. The food is fine, and pricing is reasonable but the menu is dull and struggles to demonstrate Greek food at its best, which is a shame. Breakfast selection is also only fine; for this standard of hotel I expect excellent and this hotel fails to deliver. Basic omelettes requested at breakfast were poor.
The service in the restaurant also matches the food, dull and uninspiring. Very few smiles and a fairly cold delivery of service. Several requests had to be followed up because it was unclear whether they had been understood or it was a problem in the kitchen. The above experience also seems to be consistent from experiences our friends who live in Athens get when they take guests who come to stay. Luckily the view made up for it.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback regarding your recent stay at the Hotel Grande Bretagne. Event though your overall experience at our hotel was satisfactory, we were disappointed to read that you didn’t enjoy the food and service offered at the GB Roof Garden and would like to take this opportunity to apologize. Even though the restaurant serves New Mediterranean cuisine and the menu doesn’t exclusively offer Greek food, this is not an excuse for an uninteresting selection and service. The points raised have been communicated to our Director of Restaurants in order for remedial action to be taken where needed. Hopefully we will be given the opportunity to welcome you back on a future visit to Athens.

Friends have stayed here and paid 500+ EU per night, I payed less then half booking directly and I felt like I was taking advantage of them. Ask for a room w an Acropolys view. Front desk staff was very nice and accomodating as were porters.

The Grande Bretagne is a lovely hotel with old world elegance. The rooms are a nice size, though not overly large. The bathrooms are modern, however the bathtub has a half glass, so the water gets on the floor. Ask for a room with a full bath and a view of the Acropolis. The six floor rooms have a balcony and a nice view. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We had butler service included. There is a wonderful rooftop restaurant that has a delicious buffet breakfast and overlooks the Acropolis. There outdoor pool is salt water and there are very comfortable chairs with great drinks at the rooftop bar. The carpets are worn out in several areas but overall the hotel is wonderful. The location is great and is walking distance to most sights and the subway is across the street. They will gladly help you plan your sightseeing and really understand what customer service is all about. The spa is exquisite and they even have a hot water foot massage and various steam showers to relax in. The pool indoor pool is refreshing with lovely music playing in the background. They serve delicious iced tea and fruit as well.

Room Tip: Ask for a free upgrade, a room with a view of the Acropolis, a balcony and a full shower.

I brought my girlfriend to Greece last year to introduce her to my family and to show her the country I call home every summer. Before jetting off to the islands, I thought it best I show her Athens and how luxurious it can be. We were upgraded to one of the executive grande suites known as the Hermes suite, as it was the favorite suite of designer Jean Paul Gaultier when visiting Athens. Besides having the largest terrace of the entire hotel, the Hermes suite came with daily fresh fruits and chocolates, newspapers, Hermes toiletries, and the most gracious and elegant butler and maid service.

The hotel staff at the Hotel Grande Bretagne are very professional and hospitable. The staff goes out of there way to make sure you are having a pleasant stay and even predict the needs of the guests before you even ask. The hotel staff are warm and friendly, and unlike many similar hotels in the States or in Europe, the hotel lacks an heir of stuffiness. The location of the hotel is ideal as you are in the heart of Athens and within walking distance of many major attractions.

The hotels salt water pool is on the roof and over looks Mt Lycabettus and the bar next to the pool is a great place to eat lunch and mingle. For those who are unable to stay at the Hotel Grande Bretagne, I would at least recommend eating at the GB roof garden for dinner or at least lunch so that you can experience the some of the best views of Athens.

The Hotel Grande Bretagne is a premier luxury hotel whose facilities and restaurants are only surpassed by the excellent staff who serve it.

Room Tip: Upgrade to one of the view Acropolis view rooms on the Butler Service Floors and enjoy breathtaking...
