Owner description: The Benaki Museum was founded in 1930 by Antonis Benakis and presents the historical and cultural development of the Greek nation. Through its extensive collections that cover several different cultural fields –from the age of Roman domination to the medieval Byzantine period and from the fall of Constantinople to the struggle for Greek independence in 1821- the Benaki Museum is perhaps the sole instance of a complex structure within the broader network of museum foundations in Greece.

the museum is interesting in a way that it has different types of collections

it is also fun to eat in the museum restaurant and see the view

There is a free entrance to the museum on Thursdays. Take it for at least two hours. We enjoyed it and we are happy we visited the Benaki Museum.

On aour previous trips we did not have time to visit the museums. So Benaki Museum was our first stop this time. It has a great collection. We all enjoyed it. I really enjoyed the costumes and jewelry. The cafe was also very nice.

This museum grew out of a private collection that its owner, a patriot, donated to his nation together with the elegant mansion. That much is impressive. The objects, however, are a mixed bag. I found little artistic excellence, and much that is simply interesting or curious. Paintings are mostly unattributed to artists. Only several of the paintings are noteworthy; some are amateurish. Ground floor is noisy with five interviews with contemporary artists playing continually on the loop.

We caught the funicular up Mt Lycabettus first then walked the 15 miniutes downhill to the Benaki Museum. Children are free and adults are nine euros . A price well worth it. An impressive collection which has something for everyone. My favourite was the beautiful collection of jewellery and the impressive recreation of two beautiful rooms from a palace. I also loved the costumes. A truely stunning collection to spend time walking through. It was also quieter than the other museums we had visited which was a relief.

Afterwards grab a beer or wine and something to eat in their lovely terrace restaurant. A beautiful place to spend a lazy hour or two after sightseeng.
