Toscano is a small Italian restaurant close to the Boavista roundabout. Although we hadn't made a reservation, we were made to feel very welcome by the staff, who spoke good English and helped with our selection from the menu (as it doesn't contain translations). Our meals arrived quickly and were excellent in quality and quantity.

There was live music of the solo piano player variety, which added to the atmosphere and was not too intrusive.

A good place to try if you like Italian food - we went twice during our week in Porto. Food prices are very reasonable but be careful of the wine list, some of it is on the expensive side by local standards.

We were having a lasagna in forno and gnocchi. The food was delicious and the waiter José was very helpful and kind. The prices are ok. And portions are big.

Attended as a party of six. The Toscano has a nice feel inside and I liked the decor. The waiters were friendly and spoke good English. The food was excellent and I particularly enjoyed my lasagne. It was also very good value for the money. My only criticism would be that they had a man plying a guitar and singing which to be honest wasn't really necessary and was slightly distracting during the meal whilst trying to have a conversation

We would have given a 1 but because of Ricardo (our waiter), we gave an extra point. Prior to arriving, the reviews were quite complementary of this place. My partner, having studied in Italy and therefore being well acquainted with the Italian culture and language was surprised to see that the menu was written in a new dialect, Portugalian. Our waiter was very friendly and tried to help us as much as possible. The wine he suggested was very good, which was probably the only thing we really enjoyed. Our starters comprised of a salad caprese and a beef carpaccio. The latter was decent. The caprese was rather of a joke.... it comprised of a small skewer with 3 tiny bits of mozzarella, 3 tiny cherry tomatoes and 2, maybe 3 leafs of basil. The oil used by the waiter to accompany this was of a very poor quality - i doubt extra virgin Portuguese/Italian olive oil. Our mains were again a mixed bag. The fillet with mushroom sauce and pasta was ok. The fillet was cooked well even though the mushroom sauce was average. My arrabbiata pasta was disgusting. Even though originally served with macaroni (???), i asked it to be served with spaghetti. The outcome was under seasoned pasta covered in a cheesy and oily exoskeleton (sorry about the science lingo here but could not describe any other way) while having no spice kick to it (as an arrabbiata should have). For dessert we had the chocolate cake that was decent. All in all, could not recommend as the food was definitely not genuine Italian. We were not given the 30% discount that was mentioned on the fork to make things worse. Conclusion: avoid!
