This is a must go attraction if you are in Braga. Located in the top of a hill, this church and the stairs leading to it is an outstanding piece of architecture. You can drive to the top or take the funicular.

Going to Bom Jesus de Braga , is a thing that you must do by feet, not by car. Is not so bad the uphill and in the end the view is your reward ! So if you are nearby, going to Braga and not visit this place... you never been there !

Took taxi from center of Braga for 9.50€ And visited on windy, cold, rainy day yet would not have missed visiting. Beautiful Cathedral under renovation. Nice gardens.

If you walk to Bom Jesus do Monte from the center of Braga you are in for a fair hike !!
Starting off with a medium to hard walk up a steep road, approximately 2-3 k
When you reach the entrance (its not particularly well indicated) you face around 550 stairs to climb in various stages. As I said quite a hike, but is it worth the exertion …….
Ohhhh YES , spectacular doesn't even start to describe this attraction, its beautiful ..
The views of the surrounding Braga countryside are spectacular as is the Bom Jesus site itself.
Inside the building there are renovations being carried out to the chancel so you wont get to see the alter etc
As you climb up the 550 steps there are Chapels (Capelas) at various intervals depicting an array of life size biblical scenes, very beautiful and emotional at the same time.
There is a Hotel, toilets (cost 50 cents a visit, very clean) café and giftshop
When we arrived at the top we saw there was an Vernacular (Elevador) we could have used, Ohh well, it was good exercise. You can drive straight to the top I believe but wheres the fun in that : )

The grounds were manicured to a perfection. The church was magnificent and with such detail. We rode the cable car up and walked down. We hired a cab from the Braga city center and cost less than 7 euros.

We didn't go into the church or arrive by the funicular railway but coming as we did up the magnificent staircase with rather odd fountain statues on each level (with water coming from eyes, ears and then mouth, I was worried what was coming next) it was absolutely worth the visit. I imagine it gets too busy for comfort in the high season and then only worth visiting very early in the day, but it was quite quiet in October and on a beautifully sunny and warm day it was fantastic to be able to have a leisurely coffee and fresh orange juice at the café. A truly stunning location.

We went twice! Our first visit was for a wedding in the courtyard overlooking the city of Braga. It was beautiful. We had to come back the next day to explore the elevador, the stair case, the church, the park, and paddle in the row boats. The kids ages 10, 12, and 13 loved it. The adults enjoyed a pricey but delicious breakfast of traditional Portuguese foods at one of the hotel restaurants and soaking in the beautiful vistas.

Great views and very interesting place. The kids will love the old (and ecological!) funicular. The Baroque staircase is also impressive, I would strongly recommend to walk them in your way down.

The views from the top of Bom Jesus are incredible. Be sure to check the weather and visit on a clear day, we visited twice as the first time it was hazy. We visited on a Friday and Saturday morning and had no difficult parking. It costs €1 to park within the grounds. The famous staircase is beautiful and a much easier climb than we expected. If you are moderately fit I would recommend walking rather than taking the funicular so you enjoy each of the monuments/fountains on the way up.
