Make the trip up the hill to see this. Best spot to park is as you wind up the road, as soon as you see the stairs and funicular crossing over the road, this is almost the bottom of the stairs. Short walk to the top and back. This place is stunning looking up or down.

We were taken here by our host at sunset and it was simply magical. The church was under renovation but still working try a visit. There are many bars and cafe to enjoy a drink and do not miss the illusion road. Very amusing. It is well worth a detour to visit here from braga and if you are feeling fit you can walk up the 700 steps and return by lift.

Everything has been said in the previous reviews. Simply, you must visit this if you are in Braga. Journey from and to Braga by public bus will take 20 minutes.

Of course, it's a must-do, you already know that. You can catch a bus up - the ticket is valid for 90 minutes. If you're within this time, you can catch it back down without paying again (see my photo). The steps up aren't that many - don't believe the exaggerations. If you can walk, you can walk up, with reasonable shoes, of course. Only fools visit these kind of places wearing flip-flops or high heels. You'll see hordes of locals run up and down for fitness training. We walked up the steps steadily in the hot sun - you don't want to rush up anyway. You'd want to appreciate the beauty around you. But we walked down all the way to Braga, it isn't that far if you're used to walking.

Now, Bom Jesus faces west, down towards Braga city. It's a good place to watch the sun setting, but if you're there earlier, the sun will be shining towards you, and the sun here can be mighty powerful. This makes for awful photos even if you adjust your exposure settings. With this in mind, plan your visiting time accordingly. Go either in the morning or early evening.

There is a regular bus service to and from Braga to Bom Jesus, taking only a few minutes, but we found it easier to taxi there and get a bus back. The important thing, if getting a taxi, is to get them to drop you at the foot of the funicular railway rather than at the top (i.e. where the bus stops), which apparently what they tend to do if you are not specific. The funicular railway is fascinating in that it is water powered. Each of the two cars has a very large water tank that is filled in the car at the top and emptied from the car at the bottom thus allowing gravity to provide the motive power.
The staircase itself is of course the main reason that most people visit Bom Jesus, and it is best appreciated from about halfway down the hill where the staircase begins, and it is well worth the walk up and down to see the fountains of the five wounds of Christ.
