We have just returned from a stay at the Mimosa and enjoyed our time there. As other reviews have pointed out the food does leave something to be desired (from my wife's point of view, and that of at least one other guest, that something was potatoes!) but it is broadly OK and the service is very friendly. Our room was very clean, high up with great views and there was easy access to all he hotel facilities. The entertainment was mostly not our cup of tea (with the wonderful exception of the brilliant folk/dance group - if anyone can tell me who they were that would be appreciated) and one night was in the 'sister' hotel lower down the hill in a room resembling an atmospherically challenged church hall attended by a handful of very bored guests and two couples willing to dance to appalling music. Despite reservations about the "entertainment" (again, with the noted exception of the 'Folclore' group) this was a very pleasant and enjoyable stay.

Although the hotel gets some bad reviews we have used it many times and feel it is very good value for money. We chose the hotel because we like the location with its views towards Funchal, the friendly and helpful staff and the clean and comfortable rooms. We stay in the 3 star apartments on a bed and breakfast basis.

The apartment has twin beds, table and two chairs also a comfortable chair. There is a balcony with table and chairs and either faces Funchal with outstanding views, or the sunny side faces the pool. The kitchenette is basically equipped with two rings, a fridge, and sink. There is NO microwave, electric kettle or toaster which would be useful. There is enough cutlery and crockery for two and 2 saucepans and a frying pan. You can only make a limited meal but there are plenty of restaurants nearby where you can buy a meal for about £15. The local supermarkets are well stocked and they sell hot take-away food at reasonable prices. The hotel restaurant is good for evening meals and you can buy 5 meals at 15 euros each and get 7 and use the tickets whenever you like. The breakfasts are mainly continental with a good choice of breads, fruits, yoghurts etc. The hot breakfast is limited to one or two items and the chef's choice leaves a lot to be desired.

The hotel courtesy bus operates week days only and is useful as the hotel is situated up a steep hill and it takes you up to the top and saves you walking up. Not for the unfit.

We would use the hotel again but only on a bed and breakfast tariff.

Room Tip: Views towards Funchal High Floor Sunny side pool view

After having read some of the dreadful reviews after booking this hotel I must write to say what a great hotel this is. We(four of us) have just returned from a week's holiday. The food was superb, the staff extremely friendly and helpful, the bedrooms and other areas very clean. We only stay in three star hotels and this by far is the best one ever. The food was different every night and the breakfasts we could not fault. Being on all inclusive we made lovely sandwiches to take out for lunch as we preferred to do this rather than have the packed lunches, and this was perfectly ok with the staff. The manager of the restaurant was very attentive all the time.

The courtesy bus was very useful although at the weekend it doesn't run, but the walk into Funchal is lovely and not a problem for walkers.

We shall certainly go back to Madeira and again stay at the Dorisol Mimosa.

Room Tip: We were on the 4th floor by the road overlooking the pool and sea and had the sun o our balcony mid...

We picked this hotel as part of an Easyjet Holidays package and were very pleased with the whole experience. The Mimosa is part of the Dorisol group of hotels and although at first glance the buildings are a bit dated and dull, the hotel rooms are clean and spacious with fantastic views over the town and bay.
From arrival to departure the staff were very friendly and accommodating. We stayed on a half board basis with buffet breakfast and evening meals. Breakfast was copious with a good selection of breads, cereals, fruit and yoghurts. The hot food was OK but nothing special.
Evening meals were buffet style too with a choice of main courses. The food was good and plentiful although there seemed to be pasta a lot of the time. The restaurant manager was great - friendly and welcoming and always there with a smile for the guests. Drinks were very reasonable too.
The rooms come equipped with a kitchenette and are ideal for preparing packed lunches, making hot drinks and keeping the aperitif nicely chilled! There are a couple of little supermarkets nearby too with reasonable prices.
The indoor pool (it was February!) was lovely and warm and usually pretty empty.
The evening entertainment was a bit feeble - a couple of dancers doing their bit but it was all a bit amateurish.
The hotel is well situated - we were doing some levada walks so didn't mind the steep hill up to the hotel. The courtesy bus is useful or you can take the regular local buses to town and back. We got 3 day passes and you can travel anywhere on the City bus network - including Monte and Camara de Lobos.
All in all a very good holiday - I would happily go back there again.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor with sea view. There are 2 lifts serving the 11 floors.

We've just returned from a month all inclusive holiday here. Staff very friendly, rooms a bit dated but clean, entertainment a bit boring, food very good. It's Portuguese so if you're looking for hamburgers and chips with every thing you will not enjoy it. Most guests we met were very happy with this hotel, the few that we're unhappy had paid for a three star hotel but expected a five star. It's well located, but on a steep hill so not for the unfit, the hotel has a courtesy bus so getting into Funchal was easy. We had a brilliant holiday and would quite happily use this hotel again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony facing the out door swimming pool.
