Stayed at the Hotel Windsor, based in the centre of Funchal. 5 minutes walk to the centre and transport. Supermarket and shops within 2 minutes. Hotel is very clean with good facilities but not a 4 STAR in my opinion. We asked for a change of room after 2 nights of excessive noise from other selfish hotel clients. Change was easily arranged. restaurant served great food at lunchtime and in the evening. Breakfast was also substantial.
Hotel staff were 5 star. The receptionists (Elsa and Monique) were magnificent/the cleaners were very considerate and very efficient, and the waiting staff in the restaurant were very professional.
A nice setting close to all facilities.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms at the back of the hotel-away from road noise and noise from the bar.

I understand that the owners benefit only from the perfect location but I still marvel about the lack of sense for hospitality they demonstrate. The hotel is in fact impeccably clear, but the rooms are poorly amended, the bedding is old, used and reminds the miserable hostels, there are literally any efforts for ensuring any kind of cosiness or comfort, you open the door and you hit a refrigerator put exactly in front of the door...The rooms are cold and you have only one old and overused blanket, and the tiny 1 pillow per bed seems like to be put there to remind you that Madeira has been a poor island. The breakfast is served in a modest and cold empty hall with metal chairs and paper cloths, and be advised that the "full" breakfast is full only for the first 10-20 guests and the sausages offered are of the lowest quality. That's it - a perfectly located very humble and indigent residence run by lords wit a very low horizon for hospitality. You have even to leave your room card when you go out (you will be given 1 card for all guests staying in the same room). And it is not expensive though, but do not be fooled by the 4 stars...

3 of us,all adults, stopped here for 10 days mid December, the location was perfect, right in the heart of Funchal, but that was the only thing good about it, the food was constantly cold when meant to be hot & the choices of food were worse. Repainting, (which by law they were meant to inform us about before travel) was taking place that we hadn't been informed of, but much worse than this the repainting involved drilling, hammering out sections of the walls, angle grinding, covering the windows so you couldn't see out let alone open a window & smashing 8'×4' glass sheeting with all the resulting mess & noise. This all went on the whole time we were there,& the management's response was that most people just used it as a base so it didn't affect them, in which case why did they have a swimming pool on the top floor if no one was going to use it. The notice they did put in reception said the painting would start at 9am & finish at 4,but when half four came & went & we complained to the management. They said that it would stop immediately which it did only to start again 10 minutes later & went on until we complained again at twenty to 6 & the management looked very embarrassed. The reading room offered to clients was only open Monday to Friday which was not stated. If you have a choice then CHOOSE A DIFFERENT HOTEL,we went via Mercury holidays who so far haven't resolved our complaint.

Three of us have just returned to the UK ( Cornwall ) after spending two weeks at this Hotel. I have to say we could not fault it for the price. ALL the staff were so welcoming and friendly. Ok may be for some people , the bedroom furniture may be a little dated, but it was kept very clean every day. If you want a small friendly hotel in the centre of all the action , at a good price, then this is good value for money. For those who like dressing up and swanning about at meal times then may be not for you, but for a relaxed small Hotel , the Windsor is great. The meals were all hearty, for the price and we had NO complaints at all. The two senior ladies I took with me hadn't been to Madeira before , they loved it and were very much at ease with the Hotel and the staff, and would love to go back. My thanks to all who made our holiday so much fun. J.

Room Tip: Rooms don't have balconies,5th floor fine ,limited views of the hills etc.

The reception staff were friendly and very helpful, the room was clean and everything worked with lots of hot water at any time. The breakfast was satisfactory with several choices. The location was excellent being a 10 to 15 minute walk to the sea front and the old town where several restaurants are located. Roof pool and terrace were good to while away an hour or two.
It was our first stay but we would go back if the opportunity arises.

Room Tip: From what we could tell no room would have a good view.
