“Second visit and just as good as we remembered”
Reviewed 14 February 2018 for a stay in February 2018

We were last her 3.5 years ago and decided to rebook the villa. It is just as good as we remember and Susana the host is so lovely, it’s like meeting up with a friend you haven’t seen for a while. The villa has everything we need, even the washing will be done before we go home, so I don’t have a washing mountain to tackle! It is easy to get into Funchal by car or a day lazing around enjoying the view is equally worthwhile. We will be back!

“Very spacious villa away from the bustle of Funchal”
Reviewed 16 September 2016 for a stay in September 2016

My partner and I stayed in Villa Costa for one week in September.

The villa owner was very helpful, answering emails quickly, answering our questions and providing information as requested, she also arranged for a taxi to meet us at the airport and take us to the villa, which is located less than 30 minutes drive from the airport and about 10 minutes drive from Funchal harbour. It's in an area I'd class as residential/suburban, rather than touristy, but there are a couple of small mini markets and a handful of cafes nearby

There's also a bar just below the villa which is set on a hillside, it's not noisy and wasn't a problem being so close but we didn't eat or drink there.

The rooms in the villa are spacious and the decor bright and modern, the beds comfortable and tons of wardrobe space, extra bedding and towels, although the furniture was different from that shown in the photos and I was disappointed at the lack of a really comfy sofa or armchairs to relax on. However there is a nice garden swing seat for 2 on the huge wrap around patio which was lovely to sit on by day or night plus a stone table and benches we took breakfast at whilst admiring the mountain views over Funchal. The bedrooms also have verandas with the same extensive view.

What I found unusual is that the villa has shared access which is up a flight of steps across the patio and through the extensive and elaborate tropical garden of the villa owners Mum, Noemi who care-takes the property. Her garden is well tended and crammed with unusual and interesting, artifacts, statues and ornaments and you are welcome to stroll around the garden, there is also an orchard at the rear of the villa with banana trees, figs and grapes.

Noemi has a small, pampered and lively dog which unfortunately wasn't very friendly towards us and we had to take care and close several gates as we went in and out so the little fella didn't escape.

As well as a dog she has several lovely cats, lots of caged birds and even a hen and cockerel which were let out in the garden every evening and provided a countryside feel by waking us with an alarm call at around 6.30 each day.

There were also several neighbourhood dogs which barked for long periods day and night (can you tell I'm not a dog lover?) Otherwise its a quiet neighbourhood with little traffic noise.

There's a smashing view of part of Funchal and upwards towards the mountains, unfortunately some mad town planner has seen fit to build an ugly concrete block of flats which block any glimpse of the sea and whose windows partly overlook the garden and villa.

There's a bus stop at the end of the street where you can ride down into Funchal one way about every 20 minutes and up to Madeira shopping complex the other way about once an hour. A pre paid tickets ideal and you can buy one at the big green kiosks down naear the sea front not far from the cable car station, you the just get on any bus and swipe your card as you get on.

Overall we had a very pleasant holiday and felt the villa was good value and comfortable.

“Well appointed villa ,nicely situated for Funchal”
Reviewed 11 March 2014 for a stay in February 2014

The villa is a spacious detached property situated in a residential area of Funchal approx 1mile from the main centre. It is in immaculate condition and the rooms are even larger than they appear on the photos. There is a large terrace to the front with seating areas and fabulous views of the hillside towards Monte.Entrance is via the owners property which is directly below separated by a beautifully attended garden full of a multitude of tropical plants , ornaments and small pond. The house is on the hillside so there are several flights of relatively steep steps to negotiate. The owner and her family are exceptionally helpful and friendly and genuinely want you to have a good holiday. There are flats to 1 side of the property and another set across the road which block views of the harbour but they dont feel intrusive. The main downstairs area is open plan with a dining area , lounge and 2nd seating area with games and free wi-fi.The kitchen is well stocked with utensils,kettle,toaster,fridge/freezer,microwave,proper oven, electric hob, marble worktops and breakfast bar. There is also a washing machine in the rear utility area and a downstairs toilet.Upstairs there are 3 bedrooms (2 double and 1 twin). The larger double has an en-suite bathroom whilst there is also a separate family bathroom. All 3 bedrooms have balconies with great views of the valley looking east. All the floors upstairs are wooden and downstairs are tiled. The beds are made up with sheets and duvets with spare blankets in the wardrobes. At night the area is incredibly quiet with no traffic noise and yet you are only 100 yards from a main road. There is a regular bus service into Funchal and also up to the Madeira Shopping outlet. The bus journey into the centre is approx 10 minutes whilst the walk is about 20 minutes downhill and a bit longer coming back ! Taxi one way is approx 6 euros whilst the bus is 1.35 per journey per person. If you hire a car (recommended) then there is parking at the front of the property. If you need a taxi then the owner will arrange for it to be waiting for you when you arrive at the airport. There is a very good small mini mart just around the corner along with a bakery/cafe and pizzeria.Madeira Shopping with its wide range of shops, cafes and cinema is about 5 mins by car and 10mins by bus. We had a lovely time at the villa and it represents excellent value for money when you compare what you have to pay for a hotel room of the equivalent standard. The only drawback is that the property doesnt have any heating. We had a few days of cloud and drizzle to begin with and you really notice how cold it can get inside without any heat source. However if you go in the summer then this shouldnt be an issue.Overall this villa is a great base from which to explore the island with very friendly and helpful owners on hand to help should you need it.
