The Hotel is set in exceptional gardens on a hill. We knew we were on to a winner when stating our destination to the Taxi driver at the airport and he told us we had chosen one of the best Hotels on the Island. On arrival our check -in was good with very pleasant and helpful staff. The accommadation is mainly in a long modern sigle story block and each bedroom has its own patio and grassed area with two sunloungers. There are also other rooms in two other blocks and in the Manor House. In the evening between 6-7pm there is a happy hour in the bar when drinks are half price then the food is served at 7pm. You should book a table with Reception for the evening meal. We particularly enjoyed the taste of Madeira menu, three courses with wine with each course for 36 Euro per person. Our only disappointment was that this menu did not change all week. We would have liked a set menu each night. You can get room service for an additional charge of 7 euro if required. Breakfast is served in a lovely room near the pool from 7.30am to 10.30am, there is also some seating outside. The breakfasts are delicious and beautifully presented. The selection of fresh fruit is amazing and they also have an extensive Menu you can order from which includes eggs and other hot options. Everything is delicious and it is very temptingand it is easy to over indulge. This Hotel has a Spa and Gym. The large swimming pool, which is heated, has sunloungers and towels and poolside showers and toilets, a very pleasant area. You can also order snacks/lunch by the pool. The Hotel is a twenty minute walk into town which is okay going down but we jumped into a taxi for a ride back up for 6 to 10 Euro. We also got a 5 day yellow bus pass, use the vouchers in Hotel Madeira guide book for twenty five per cent off. We paid 18 Euro each for the five day ticket and travelled to all the yellow bus destinations/attractions and back and forth to our Hotel. Great value for money. As you come out of the Hotel turn left and go down the Hill for more Restaurants and buses (including the yellow bus). This is where the majority of Hotels in Funchal are located. We loved the tranquility of our Hotel set in beautifull gardens, an oasis of peace and quiet in a busy area. Thank you Quinta da Casa Branca for a lovely enjoyable stay which was made perfect by your exceptional staff. They are all very hard working and dedicated, always there to help, they are very polite and friendly and extremely efficient. If we ever return
to Madeira we would love to stay with you again.

I stayed at both this hotels and its sister hotel Jardins do Lafo during the same holiday so here a direct comparison.

This hotel has an excellent city centre location but is surprisingly quiet. Premium rooms were very nice. Bedroom area wasn't as big as JDL but the bathrooms were better as they had a separate shower. Gardens were lovely but slightly edged out by JDLs.

I didn't like the breakfasts at this hotel and thought they were more suited to the germans and scandinavians who seemed to make up the bulk of the visitors when we were there. The breakfasts were much better at JDL. The service also seemed a bit disorganised at this hotel too.

I did like the fact that this hotel has formal and casual dining in different parts of the hotel. Didn't try the formal dining but tried the casual dining a couple of times. It was nice but not exceptional. Going back this year so will try the formal dining in the manor house. Unlike JDL this jotel has an outside bar which was great for pre and post dinner drinks. Lovely to sit outside on a walm September evening.

The pool area is better at JDL. Its bigger and the service is superior at JDL. The staff there walk around the pool periodically taking orders for drinks and food. There are supposed to be buzzers at this hotel to call for food and drinks but none of them work so you have to trek back to the bistro to order. Might seem trivial but I'm super lazy on holiday and like to have pool service. Also, when we did order drinks they took ages to appear. Again, the staff at the bistro didn't seem that organised.

There is also a problem at this hotel with sunbed hogging which I've never seen happen at JDL. We were only there for 4 days but I saw many guests putting towels out early morning and then not showing up until late afternoon. Pet hate of mine and a big No no. Staff should not allow this to happen and remove the towels if the beds aren't occupied within 45 minutes - but then there are no staff at the poolside so I guess that's why the germans are allowed to get away with it. Bed hogging did not happen at JDL.

Either hotel would provide a great holiday. We're going back later this year so we'll see if the pool service has improved and whether the hotel have taken note of the sun bed hogging issue.

Room Tip: Top floor premium rooms were nice although the lower ground standard rooms had direct access to the garden.

Quinta Casa Branca is a real find and is listed as 'one of the best small boutique hotels in the world' . Set within stunning gardens the old manor house is fused with very modern accomodation areas. This hotel has won a number of awards for its architecture and they are well deserved. The rooms ( I am told 49 in total)are spacious and of a high standard. The hotel is fastidiously clean and the staff extremely attentive. The true mark is would I go back ? the answer is a most definitely Yes. And when faced with a problem the staff will go that extra yard to resolve it for you
The hotel is based near to the 'Lido area 'and slightly up a hill. A 20 minute stroll will take you towards and into the old town,
To eat here is at 'the expensive end ' of Funchal prices but the quality is good. Breakfast is varied and very nice. There are some very nice restaurants nearby...the Central Grill is a must and is situated next to the Football Stadium a 10 minute walk up the hill and a 5 minute walk back down the same hill !!...The restaurant to avoid is the one with the Parrot on the door...very poor fare...and not a lot cheaper than the hotel. There is also a fantastic patisserie and coffee house just outside the door I believe its called 'Moments'.. well worth a visit. There is also a supermarket (albeit on the small side for any essential supplies!!)
If there is a criticism it would be around the breakfast time. The breakfast area is small and the tables outside too few for the number of guests who wish to breakfast enjoying the sun and stunning views. We actually did see some guests waiting for others to finish before pouncing into their seats before they had walked a yard !!...If I was to make a suggestion I would open the bar patio immediately next door and serve coffee there after people have eaten.. thereby freeing up some tables and allowing others to sit outside....either that or you need to turn up really early or really late... note that they do stop serving at 10:30 am so best not make it too late!!
A handy hint....when in the bar buy the bottle of wine...it can be expensive by the glass ...and the bar closes at midnight in case you are after a nightcap!!

Room Tip: They are all nice...you shouldn't worry where they put you.

This is well away from the hustle and bustle of the seafront and delightfully situated in gorgeous gardens. I was due a replacement hip so couldn't make the walk to and from town, but the weekly bus pass at 22 euros was good value and there are plenty of buses running nearby. Staff were friendly and efficient, the rooms very well appointed and clean. We were on the ground floor with a patio and sunbeds that could be pulled fully onto the lawn, or kept more private. The two pools were quiet and relaxing. Loved it all, including lots of choice at breakfast.
