We last stayed at this hotel in 1998 and when we booked in they remembered we had stayed before !
It's just as good as it was on our first visit.
The service is superb - efficient but friendly and not intrusive.
The food is excellent for both breakfast and dinner.
Hotel facilities are excellent.
It's probably more suited to the more "mature" visitor but children are welcome.
They have a sister hotel about a km away which we visited. i think would be a better choice with children. We had lunch there and it looked good.
We will definitely return for when we visit Funchal again.

Room Tip: Harbour view is better than sea view and priced as such.

We stay at the Cliff Bay every year in March. The staff are excellent (and usually the same staff every year), the facilities are wonderful; and it is set at a great location on the the Island of Madeira.

Room Tip: We like the Funchal view, but we have friends that prefer the sea view

Wonderful situation, beautiful scenery (our room looked directly into the harbour and we rose early to watch the dawn and the early liners arrive), great staff and excellent food (review of Il Gallo d'Oro elsewhere). Breakfasts were great with a wonderful choice of fruit, yoghurt, cold meats and cheese, cooked breakfast, amazing breads and those wonderful Portuguese custard tarts. Good bar area with live music. The sea level was closed for 3 days after recent storms but the staff worked hard to reopen it as soon as possible. Spa was great. Transfer into town was straightforward and it was a pleasant stroll if one preferred to walk than use the courtesy bus. The current building works to create an apartment block were on our room's side of the hotel, but there was no undue noise or interference. Very special - return visit sorted!

Was a little worried that this hotel would be too far from the centre of Funchal on foot, but it’s just about the right distance, balancing a lovely hotel and the amenities of the town. The swimming pools are well apportioned the gardens are v well maintained and (coming at Easter) the decorations were amazing.

First impressions are that there is enough space for everyone and you therefore don’t feel like you have to be crammed in with other people’s holidays. In fact the only really busy place was the breakfast room (Not crowed by any measure). The staff are amazingly attentive without being in your face, and very happy to serve you. The landscaping of the facilities is v well designed and everywhere is full of light. We had one of the 18 rooms that face the garden and there is no issue (obviously the Funchal facing rooms are where to aim for if you have the choice).

Great place for a break and having been to the island before, this is a v good choice for future visits
