“A must when visiting Lisbon!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 February 2012

Apparently 10,000 Belem cakes are sold each day. After tasting one I can see why. Don't worry about the line-it moves fast! Have your money ready-each cake costs 1.05 Euro. Get them to go in a lovely cardboard box (make sure your use the cinnamon and sugar packets included) or stay and have them with a cup of coffee in the cafe.

“Only here”

You won't find a cake like this anywhere in the world. Eat it with some cinnamon (if you con or like).

“Very greasy”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 February 2012

I have eaten better Belem pastries in the city (bakery Santa Marta at Rua Rodrigues Sampaio, near to Britania Hotel ). In my opinion, the so famous Pasteis de Belem at Pastelaria Belem \ Belem, are greasy.

“Mind the trap”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 February 2012

Each time I visit this place or, what is more common, each time I eat a pastel de nata from this house, I wonder why there's so many people queuing to eat a custard tart that can be found anywhere in Lisbon, or even all over Portugal. Some are better than others and there are surely a lot that are much better than this pastry house (not a restaurant). The cream is good but the puff pastry is much too greasy for my taste.
Maybe because I'm very found of pastéis de nata...
A tip; if you´re in Baixa try the pastel de nata at Casa Brasileira, in Rua Augusta. If near Saldanha try Versalhes, so beautiful and with nice service.
Ok, Casa de Pastéis de Belém it´s an institution, it should be on the attractions pages, not among restaurants. It´s for tourists.
