We picked the 7 Hotel for its convenience to many of the venues we wanted to visit in Portugal and we were right on target. The Hotel is small by modern standards, but felt very boutiquey. It was very clean and inviting, the staff was hospitable and pleasant, and the rooms were spotless and cozy for two. We had a kitchenette, a plus, but unused. We were on the front of the hotel on the main street, but the walls and glass were well insulated and we didn’t hear any noise or traffic with the windows closed.
7 Hotel is on Rua Aurea literally around the corner from the Baixa Chiado Metro (the intersection of the Green and Blue lines) – a 2 min walk. Hidden up the street (Ruo do Cricifixo) to the right is an entrance to the multistory Armazens Do Chiado Mall (modern urban indoor shopping mall). Look for number 84 or 89 (sorry, I can’t remember which – ask at the desk) on the left side (no sign for the mall). There is a short hallway to elevators, remember your floor as it can be confusing to exit this way. The main entrance to the mall is on the opposite side of the building at the intersection of Rua Nova do Almada and Rua Barrett. The Rossio train station and Praca (plaza) da Figueira are adjacent and just a 5 min walk to the north from the hotel. From here you can take an intercity train to other Portugal cities or sightseeing busses and local trolleys to many areas of interest in the city. A 5 minute walk to the south from the hotel will take you to the Rua Agusta Arc and the Praca do Commercio. This is a good place to catch a trolley to Belem.
Two blocks east of the 7 Hotel, another 2 min walk is Rua Agusta, a pedestrian street with what seems like hundreds of restaurants. While we ate at a restaurant on Rua Agusta, our memorable meals were at Tasca D’ Lyon two blocks from 7 Hotel on Rua dos Sapateiros and a pizza takeout from Pizzeria MezzoGiorno up the hill behind the mall (in an enclosed plaza off Rua Ivens, get detailed directions from desk).
We took the train from Rossio to Sintra to see the Park and Palace of Pena, unfortunately in the rain. We took a cab from the hotel to the Castelo S. Jorge and walked back downhill to Praca Figueira. From Praca Figueira, we took trolley #12E on a 20 minute loop around Castelo S. Jorge and the Alfama. From Praca do Commercio, we took trolley 15E to Belem.
If you only have a few days in Lisbon or you are on a budget, the 7 Hotel is a perfect place to stay. It is a short walking distance to many sights as well as two train stations and one metro station and more restaurants than you can count.
