“Smart hotel but don't drink here”
Reviewed 5 July 2012

If you like to be greeted by 5 or 6 staff as you walk through the lobby, you will love this hotel. There is nothing wrong with the building or gardens but there shouldn't be at this price. However, the food and drink are verging on poor and the prices exhorbitant. What should have been freshly squeezed orange juice (at these prices) tasted of sherbet. (I've never tasted Sunny Delight before, but I may have done so at the Lapa Palace.) I paid 9 Euros for a glass of wine that would not be great value at 3 Euros a bottle. Location is good for visiting embassies but everywhere else is a taxi ride.

We booked a superior room with a river view for a 4 night stay, which was very large with a good bed and lovely bathroom. Staff were attentive, breakfast was good. The hotel was fairly quiet and despite its location in Lapa being a short taxi ride to the centre of town it is well worth making the small sacrifice of it not being totally central. Taxis are incerdibly inexpensive too compared to other European Cities. Tasca De esquina nearby is one of the nicest tapas restaurnats i have ever dined at . Lisbon and the Lapa Palace truly are a great combination for lazy days by the pool or short stroll , folowed by excellent vallue dining in the evening and if you want the beach the Train to Cascais takes 30 minutes from Lapa. Would return tomorrow!

Room Tip: River view room

The palatial front entrance makes a wonderful first impression, but it gives no hint of the hotel’s most spectacular charms: expansive, beautifully landscaped grounds and panoramic views of the Tagus River.

As befits a 19th century palace and five-star hotel, the public areas are elegantly decorated with frescoes, patterned marble floors, and reproduction antique furnishings. Charming verandas allow guests to enjoy breakfast or drinks al fresco.

Our rooms in the modern wing were nicely appointed and luxurious, and our beds and bed linens were very comfortable. (We slept quite soundly!) Our balcony afforded sweeping views of gorgeous gardens, the lovely swimming pool, and the riverfront in the distance. Our spacious, bidet-equipped, marble bath was stocked with fragrant l’Occitane toiletries.

The staff is courteous, efficient, and accommodating. One night we returned to the hotel, decided it was too early to retire, and asked the concierge where we might find traditional Lisboan fado music. He made a quick call, and within minutes we were seated at the nearby Senor Vinho, sipping Douro Valley albarinho and enjoying one of the most highly recommended fado performances in town.

The Lapa Palace is perfectly located on a hilltop in a quiet neighborhood; it’s neither too close to the fray of the city center nor too far from it. Our only wish is that we had spent more than two nights there.

Room Tip: We loved our rooms near the end of a long hallway leading away from the lobby area. Very quiet, with...

A lovely hotel, with a lot of staff, I would recommend if you want somewhere away from the hustle and bustle of Lisbon, but I found it very remote, taxis are very reasonable, but if you want to pop out for an evening stroll there is not much going on. We went to restaurants recommended by the hotel, the local Italian I was not impressed with, I felt I had gone back in time 20 years.

The hotel itself is very Grand, the rooms are large and kept very clean. I used the gym a couple of times, some good machines. The pool area is very attractive, we ordered food once from the pool, a Club Sandwich which took over 30 minutes to arrive which i thought disappointing considering it was the most expensive sandwich I have ever had.

Room Tip: Try and go for a room on floor 5/6 for the view
