Owner description: Wonderful sights delight walkers at every turn in this culturally rich and charming part of Lisbon, which through its architecture reminds visitors of its Visigothic roots, Arabic influence and fishing port heritage.

You can travel up this area in part using Tram 28 but I heard one story of attempted robbery so be careful. Because of my disability, we took a private tour that took us all the way to the castle, the driver displaying enormous skill in narrow streets. the very attractive narrow street s are lived by people living ordinary lives and in any other city in Europe, the area would be full of tourist tea shops and hte likes. the coffee shops had locals in them, the streets were very attractive and uniquely Portuguese and you could glimpse panoramic views here and there. At the very top, you enter the castle.
We felt we had been somewhere different and as it was February, there were few other touruists about.

Viewed from every angle, it could be any city in Europe. The huge hike and snaking laneways are physically demanding, so consider other options like the tram and bus to reach the summit and also to descend. Can be very photogenic for shutterbugs, but two hours is enough.

Go to Go Lisbon, and follow the walk down from the castle to the river. Takes you down through quaint little streets and Fado houses, as well as seeing more locals than visitors if you time it late in the day, when most visitors have left. As you walk back into town have a glass of port at the port shop on your left.

Fascinating side streets but very tiring to climb up and down stairways between levels.
Try the quaint no 12 yellow tram tour of the area.

This area is great for a walking tour, if it's sunny (which it is mostly in Lisbon!) take a stroll around, up and down the cobbled hilly streets, look at the lovely old buildings and statues.
