Manuel and Paula have such a delightfully individual house, described by Manuel as a 'folly' built by his film-director grandfather in the 1920s - the house and fabulous grounds provide a surprise around every corner and the guest 'garden room' is tucked away in complete privacy from the main house. You are the only guests at the house and as such feel very privileged and spoilt!
The garden room itself is stylishly simple rather than luxurious, you could well imagine it as a beach house or in a tropical forest ( you fall asleep to the sound of the stream running close by and the occasional calls of the family Cockatoo!)
The grounds include a fabulous pool and your own private covered seating area in Indian or Turkish style with distant views of the Sintra hills - perfect.
Breakfast is perfectly presented on fabulous Portuguese crockery - every morning it was a different selection from Manuel's art and antique dealer's collection, with delicious fresh fruit and juices, bread, local honey and jams and strong & fragrant coffee. If you eat inside it is in a domed ceilinged dining room with faded murals and surrounded by pictures, books and antiques - or outside in fine weather overlooking the pool and gardens. Either way it's a fabulous and inspiring start to the day and Manuel is happy to give advice and recommendations for your sightseeing schedule.
We combined the splendours of nearby Sintra with beach restaurant lunches and then returned for a relaxing dip and snooze and read by the pool before going out again for an evening meal in the village or nearby ( 2 to 5 km) beach restaurants. An excellent location and less than an hour to Lisbon.
